Reflections for Sheriff Salvatore Frank "Tudie" Navarra

Salvatore Navarra was my Uncle Tudie and my God Father. He died in my Junior year of high school. I have many fond memories of summers in Greensburg. Family reunions on the 4th of July, at the city park. Uncle Tudie always brought a big tub of iced watermelons. He would let me wait on customers at his fruit market on the square. He was a funny, loving, caring man. When he became sheriff I always prayed for his safety. God took him anyway. He watches over us all now. I now pray for all of the officers and their family's who have been lost in the line of duty. See you on the other side Uncle Tudie.

Although we did not get to meet but I have heard so much about you I feel like I knew you. Grandpa, you have always been my hero and special to me even though we have never met. I try to honor your memory every day.

Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.
Thank you for your heroism.
GOD Bless

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 51rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

Uncle Tudie, I have many fond memories of you and Aunt Audrey. I was a young teen when you left us. I will always miss you both. I came across this website while working on our family history. May God watch over all the officers and keep them in his care. Judy Foster Clark

I was reading through the names of all those who lost their lives in 1961 (my brother was also lost to us that year in a car accident while on duty))and saw that you share a first name with not only my brother...but also my son who was his namesake...and was killed in Jan. 2006.

I know many Salvatores' and it seems they all have been called back home much too soon. All the circumstances that cost lives are equally heartbreaking...and I am touched by all of them.

It is unfortunate that so many of these officers' families are not aware of this site because they were lost long before we had the ODMP. I wish there was some way they could know that these officers are not only remembered by their individual families...but are not forgotten by many families who frequent this site to honor these fallen heroes.

May God's perpetual light continue to shine upon the soul of Sheriff Salvatore Navarra, and may he rest in His eternal peace for having made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting and serving his community.

With my prayers and deepest sympathy,

Anita L. Culosi

My grandfather was sheriff of Decatur County 1971-74. It was a neat experience for me. I am glad that The Decatur County Sheriff's Department honors their own. Sheriff Navarra rest in peace!!!!!!!!!

SHERIFF NAVARRA,
YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN. THERE IS A PLAQUE AT THE JAIL IN HONOR OF YOU, BILL RAINER AND ANDREW WINTZENRED FOR THE ALTIMATE SACRAFICE ALL OF YOU GAVE FOR OUR COUNTY. I KNOW THE STORY OF THAT NIGHT IN CLARKSBURG AND YOUR STORY IS STILL ALIVE AT OUR DEPARTMENT. WE NEVER FORGET A BROTHER.

Sheriff Navarra,

This is my first time on this site, while browsing the list of departments in Indiana that have lost officers in the line of duty, I was shocked to see that the DCSD had lost an officer. Thank you for your service to Decatur County, it's horrifying to me that you have been forgotten by the county & your department. There has never been any mention of you death in the line of duty, not even a short story in the newspaper on the 40th anniversary of your death. I promise that I will try to see about getting something mentioned in the Daily News this year on the anniversary of your death, even if it's only a few lines. We all owe you that at the very least. RIP, you've done your duty well.
