Reflections for Sheriff Enoch B. Morelock

Enoch would be my great great great grandfather. I’m curious about the 1912 biography whether written by Edward or Jacob. Have to look into that. Certainly a proud family lineage.

Enoch Baker Morelock was born May 24, 1811, in Greene County, Tennessee, where he married Susanna A. Limbaugh (also spelled Linebaugh), February 12, 1829. They moved to Sullivan County, Missouri, in or about 1841. They had five children. His widow married Price Stewart (my 2nd great-grandfather), September 7, 1851, but apparently separated soon after because Susanna Morelock moved to Summerville, Union County, Oregon, with her sons in May 1865 where she died August 27, 1879. According to his son's 1912 biography, Sheriff Morelock was killed by the property owner while conducting a sheriff's sale for the owner's property that had been seized by the Sullivan County court. This tribute assures that Sheriff Morelock will never be forgotten for simply performing his duties as the Sullivan County Sheriff.

Sheriff Morelock was the first law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in the Western Judicial District (WDMO). He is honored annually by the U.S. Attorney's Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee (LECC)by virtue of the Enoch Morelock Award presented to a LEO who exhibits outstanding qualities. This is a fitting tribute to one who paid the ultimate price.
