Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Steve N. Mullins

Steve, remembering you today with great respect as both a former fellow police officer and someone who in our same high school thought you were just a wonderful, kind guy, and you were so liked by so many. Thank you for your law enforcement service and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Steve, it has been 21 years now since the Lord called you home. It has definitely been a ride here on this earth. I remember you and David, my brother, being best of friends, growing up at our house. You first taught me how to shoot a revolver while I was still in college. I can remember my first day in 1989 when I pinned the badge on and how we worked together...I still tell the stories about the fights we were in fighting the bad guys. I remember when the Lord got a hold of you and your life changed forever. I saw a great deputy sheriff but a great Godly man that truly was anointed. Then the tragic day came that took you from us ..... broke my heart. I still think of you every day when I walk in the Sheriff's Office, looking at your picture. I am now in the twilight of my career...got about 3 more years and I'll retire from this circus. Thank you for helping me to become the Deputy Sheriff that I always wanted to be. I know you are worshipping our Lord and Savior and I know one day I'll get to join you and all my brothers and sisters in law enforcement. Thank you Steve!!

I knew you early in my law enforcement profession. I can recall my times on Delta shift when I would meet up with you and just talk between our North and South end zones. You were a man of faith and inspriation to a young recruit like me. I never knew what impact you would have on my life, but after twenty-five years, I do now.

I am the training coordinator at my agency now, every class I have with new recruits begins with a prayer and a thought of why I do this. You always come to mind. Many officer's go through their professional life never feeling the way we do that have lost friends. Some don't understand why we are sometimes hard or what is driving us to train to a level of perfection. I would say it's because of men like you that influenced men like me.

One day my friend, my watch will end as well, till then, I will prepare those that will proceed us in this profession.

Thank you for being a friend. God bless you and the life you paved for others.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I knew Steve from an early age.He was a great man who loved God, and we attended Christian Life Center together.
My father Scott Shipley and Steve served for years together as Sullivan County Sheriff's Deputies. I then became very close to Steve and his wife GeorgeAnn.
If you ever had the chance of meeting him then you would truly understand the loss of losing such a great man.
As we have heard for years our loss in heaven's gain.
He will be greatly missed!

I think it is a very sad and shameful thing to have let those kids off with such a slap on the wrist. Two years for murder just doesn't seem right, I don't care what age you are!

What can I say about a man of this caliber. A good friend, commrade, a Godly man that truely loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, his family, his community, on and on. Steve was this type of man. I remember well receiving the telephone call informing me that Steve had been killed. A part of all that knew and loved him was torn from our hearts. I am of all men blessed to have known a friend like Steve. I recall the many times we would signal 8 and just talk about God and the protecting angels we had sensed as officers. Steve I miss you buddy. I hope, in the grand scheme of things, that God has allowed you to see all the good things he accomplished through you during your earthly ministery.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, November 22, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Deputy Sheriff Steve N. Mullins who died in the line of duty on this date ten years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Dep. Mullins' sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Steve,

I don't think you ever knew that you were one of the reasons I became a cop. You were a good cop, a good person, and a good Christian. You encouraged me and emphasized the important (and often overlooked) aspects of the job. You didn't let the job jade you. There aren't many out there like you. Thank you. My life would have been very different without your influence. God bless.

Gosh Steve, I can't believe it's been almost 9 years since you left us, where does the time go? I often think of you and miss our long talks about the job and our military experiences. I know that your in a better place, you were a true Christian and cared alot for your fellow officers.

You are missed.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
