Reflections for Patrolman Francis McDermott

Patrolman McDermott, it has been 115 years since you were taken from us. New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your law enforcement service.

While your assailants may have never faced justice here on earth, they surely faced a much higher justice elsewhere at alter time. Rest in peace always knowing that no passage of time will ever erase your memory, service and sacrifice.

According to the autopsy reports, as noted in the Boston Globe, the officers died from gunfire. The report noted that Patrolman McDermott was shot three times in addition to being beaten.

These officers died from a physical assault not gunfire. The rememberance on the Methuen Police Facebook page reflects this fact. News reports from the time also mention beating as the cause of death.

Patrolman McDermott
, it’s hard to believe that you were in all likelihood murdered over hay. How low some people are astonishes me sometimes. Thank you for your efforts on behalf of the people of Methuen and the Commonwealth as a whole. Where ever your killers ended up, I hope they faced true justice.

God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.
