Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrol Officer Aubrey Eugene McCurry

I served with Officer McCurry in 1983 as an Umatilla Tribal Officer. He was a friend and has been missed. It is hard to remember when I was told he was gone, but my memories of him will always be in my heart. God bless you Gene.

I cannot believe it has been 28 years. I think of you often and still think of things I would like to share with you of my day and what should have been our life. (Like grandchildren and so much more.) You were taken away too soon and I still miss you.

I am a friend of Gene's youngest son Mike, and I remember you as a very good man, and I know you kids are better because of you and what you thought them. I remember feeling safe when you all live 3 or 4 houses from me. I remember the day you where lost, and how our little town of Myrtle Point rallied behind your family. I too now serve our town not in the Police Department, but on the City Council. I will try and put up a memorial in your honor here in the little town your protected all those years ago.

I realized today I am the same age as mom when she lost you. I miss you every day. You never got to meet your grand children. That is simply the worst part. I want to thank those who lost family, near the same day perhaps in a year far from your own. They know a pain similar to what I know. Some of them made comments here, Derwin Boggs (Who I would like to talk to), Ret. Sgt. Darrell King, David L. Bell a Sergeant in South Carolina, James Sheppard, Phyllis Loya and Robert Moore (who had a funny nickname, I won't say it here.) He is one I personally have met. These people knew you, or at the least had family who stood up knowing the risk, and became honest to God Heroes! Papa, You are MY HERO! That will never change. Here I am serving the people, as a simple bus driver in Portland. I can not do what you did, I can not risk my life as every officer does every single day to keep the public safe from bad people. I just get them home. While on MY bus they are safe, like you made the whole community safe. Again, my Hero. As this 25th year moves on, I am better because of you. I will always miss you, but your power makes me... ME. I love you for all of time.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 24th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
