Patrolman Mateer, both you and the Metropolitan Police are a part of Massachusetts history, a proud part. Your heroic act was repeated in Worcester last June. Your type of heroism is never forgotten, nor should it be.

We will honor the Metropolitan Police for all time, and you are a major part of that Department's history. You are not forgotten, nor will you be. You are a true hero.

Forever Rest in Peace, Brother and God Bless.

Patrolman Mateer was an inspiration to all of us that have worked at the "Hills". We saw the picture every day of him sitting proudly on his horse. It hangs in a place of honor in the report room of the barracks. His sacrifice will never be forgotten by the troopers of H7.

For Patrolman William Mateer:

Our duty as law officers takes us into a realm of danger that is only to be compared with military warriors when considering the range of perils that await us. We begin our day with the routine and sometimes find ourselves in situations involving traffic, firearms, fire, explosives, situations involving heights, raging rivers and icy plunges into unknown depths. The law officer must act now and he must sometimes act by himself. Such was the case for our brother Bill. We regret that he would give his own life while attempting to save the life of another.

We pray for his soul and hope that all his living relatives still look back on this relative who stood among them as one courageous soldier-of-the-law. He might well have portrayed himself as a model for others in his family who also chose to wear the badge and follow his example of what we all recognize as one fine cop - who gave his life in service to others in a most exemplary manner.

I am proud to render Patrolman William Mateer a final salute.

Patrolman Mateer, it's been over 100 years since your passing. It was a tragic accident but you died trying to save the life of another. It's what being a hero is all about, not the dying, the trying.

God Bless and may you (and the Metropolitan Police) continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.
