Reflections for Correctional Officer Gerald Peter Magee

Gerald was my father’s maternal cousin. His death had a profound effect on my maternal grandmother and maternal great aunt. The most difficult thing for my family was that the acquittal of the offenders.

So sad. Correctional Officer Magee you should rest in peace. How these heinous individuals can get away with murder and walk the face of this Earth is totally unexplainable. You were an honest and dignified servant.

You've been on my mind so much recently as the 35th year of your passing nears. You touched so many lives with your kind spirit. You will always be in the depth of my heart.

I met Jerry in early 1981 when I was a young brash 18 year old corrections officer at PNM. Jerry took me under his wing, taught me a thing or two. Though 35 years have passed from when I last knew him, I do carry a piece of him in my heart. I am proud to call him friend.

It takes a certain type of person to work in an environement where you are unarmed and with individuals who have no respect for life. You are a very brave individual. You will never be forgotten by those that love you, nor will the law enforcement community ever let you be forgotten. Thank you for keeping us out here safe.

Gerald was my second cousin. I can remember my aunts and the rest of my family were devastated by his death although I was only a teenager at the time. I always remember him being kind hearted.

I was there that fateful night. I witnessed helplessly as the inmates took over that cell block where Officer Magee was working. That was the last time I saw Gerald. It's been thirty years and I can still recall the whole thing. Gerald rode with me to work that evening just like all the other nights. We were friends and worked together. I will always miss him and think of him often. God Bless You, Gerald.

You were one of the greatest loves in my life and it took me so long to see that. I cherish the short time we had together. I can close my eyes and hear your laugh as well as visualize the blue of your eyes. There was no justice in your fall as you served to protect. It changed the lives of so many.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
