Reflections for Sheriff Sam C. Long

Great grandson, grandfather was Samuel Long, son of sheriff long. We visit each year in May for Frontier Days to catch up with the town and its growth and happenings. They are now in their 3rd jail due to massive tribal casino operations and the resulting crimes that occur. It is also complicated with McGirt ruling. The Chickasaws are not equipped to handle the massive influx of new crimes they now must process. The Love County history center is one of the best I have seen for a town 10x their size. The old jail is now a veteran museum. I have visited dozens of times now. The Liddell jail is going to become a county commissioner office. It is named for sheriff Liddell. There have been 2 sheriff Liddells as his son also was deputy. The man who killed Sheriff long was a Liddell and is the same family as the Sheriff Liddell. He once said the Liddell family wanted to redeem their name.

I'm doing research on my great grandfather Sam C Long. I doing so I came across this site. It really warm my heart to read such kind reflection. I never knew my great grandfather, but my dad was named after him. I spent many of summers at my grandfather's (Walter F Long) farm in Marietta. Even visited the jail where my grandparents live and worked in Marietta. I heard a lot of stories form my grandparents about SC Long.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

The tradition lives on in the family. Sheriff Long was a true Lawman and a servant of his comminity. He was a Commissioner for this County Prior to being elected Sheriff.

The heroic effort of Sheriff Long to stop the bank robbery tells of how he was dedicated to his community. This story was told to me by his youngest daughter (my grandmother) who was sixteen years old at the time of his death.

Thanks to all who serve with us.
