Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert R. Lawson

Grandpa… I was only 2 when you were taken from all of us and can’t remember your face. I hear so many great stories of you and meet many people that loved and respected who you were as a person/officer. I so wish we could of had more time but know you’re there with me everyday I walk the line. I can only hope to be as great as you. I rejoice for the day we meet in heaven. I love and miss you Buddy Guy

I grew up just a few miles away from Taconite in Marble Mn. In 1981, I was a freshman in high school and had already made my decision to become a police officer. EVERYONE knew Deputy Beefy Lawson if you lived east of Grand Rapids in Itasca County. He was well known and a well respected law man. RIP sir, you are gone, but as you can see, not forgotten!

I was a St. Louis Co. Deputy when this went down. My regret at the time was that Fox was taken alive and uninjured. I have sent my usual letter in to the parol board to lock Audie Fox up in a cell in the basement of the pen with the biggest, baddist, gay prisoner, weld the door shut, turn off the water except for the toilet, and feed them peanut butter sandwichs.

I remember the day all to well Deputy (Beefy) Lawson was shot and killed by Audie Fox. He was a close friend of my Dad growing up in Taconite. He was one reason I got into L.E. I always send in a letter to MN Parole Board to deny parole for Audie Fox who executed Deputy Lawson.
RIP Brother Beefy. We will never forget you. God Bless your family and friends.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. I also worked for Itasca County only in the welfare department. Beefy was a great man and loved by everyone. We all prayed for a better outcome, but it was not to be. His daughter was also our neighbor. Every time Mr. Fox's parole comes up I pray that it is not granted.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 28th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Todd, I am sure your father is very proud that you have continued his legacy of protecting and serving.

Although I was only nine years old, I remember vividly how this event shook the entire Iron Range. I never had the pleasure of meeting you, but your name and memory will forever be in my heart and prayers. Thank you for your service, and God bless you, Hero.

Dad.It has been 26 years since you left. I feel so proud as your son and a current Police Officer. You gave your life, so others could live and enjoy theirs as god intended life to be lived. I miss you greatly and I hope someday to be half the Officer that you were. See you in heaven. Love Your Son Todd.

All these years later, I still often think of Mr. Lawson. I was a friend of his children and was lucky enough to have known him. He was a fine example of the influence one person can have on many people he touched. You are truely loved and missed. God bless you, your family and fellow officers. Dora Spangenberg Ricard
