Reflections for Police Officer Stewart E. Savage, III

Officer Savage, it has been 19 years since you were taken from us. New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your 7 years of law enforcement service.

03/18/ 2020 My wife Deb Ordway woke up today and said she had a dream about Stew. Deb was a Sgt on Wellesley P.D. and close friend of Stew’s as well as I was, He started out as a Dispatcher at Wellesley College PD where I was a Sgt at the time. I asked if he was Smiling she said yes. I then told her it was the anniversary of his death. She was floored She said in her dream he was happy and had given her a kiss on the cheek

Officer Savage,
It was an honor and a privilege to have served with you as a member of the Wellesley Police Department. Your commitment to duty, family and community will always be remembered. You were the one who would step up to the plate and go the extra mile to help someone in need or make the arrest to help keep our streets safe. You and your family are kept in my thoughts and prayers always. Rest in Eternal Peace My Brother.

Think of you often my feisty fun loving cousin, but especially at this time of year. That devilish grin, and wicked sense of snarky Savage humor will never be forgotten. You live on in the hearts of many. You are missed and loved and we were all cheated out of so many memories yet left to make with you. I also think of your sweet Ann that sad sad day you were laid to rest and the emptiness we felt even though there were so many gathered there ... A day of sorrow, of love, of respect, and so much more....May God Bless your fellow officers and keep them safe... Love from Texas, Susan

It has been 15 years. It seems like an eternity, but at the same time, it's as if you were just here. I treasure my memories still and always will. The world lost a true hero that day - you had so much to give, and in the end that's exactly what you did. Thank you for your love, thank you for your smile, thank you for your laugh and your ability to make me laugh still. Thank you for your guidance, then and now. And thank you for your courage and bravery, to always protect and to serve. I will love you forever and always.

Officer Savage, today marks the 14th anniversary of your passing. You left behind family and friends, who loved you, but you had a job to do and you did it. Many look at police pursuits as something caused by the police. Common sense would tell anyone that it’s the person behind the wheel of the car being pursued that causes pursuits. You needed to catch that low life that wouldn’t stop, not because it was fun, but because it was your job and no one can know for sure why someone won’t stop until he/she has stopped. You did your job and by the accounts I’ve read here and some of the stories I heard at your funeral those many years ago, you did your job very well. The “Job” misses you.

God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Savage and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Savage has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Savage, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Savage is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
