Reflections for Detective Giles R. Landry

Giles and I would meet up when I was on patrol in New Gloucester as a local patrolman. I remember the night we met and him telling me that he had applied for the detective's position. I wished him the best of success. He being a man of faith and knowing I was also, ask me to keep him in prayer as he wanted God's leading in the matter. I told him I would.

The Apostle Paul said, "We don't always know why things happen as they do, but we don't quit and give up."

All I know my heart still breaks, until I see him again.

Thirty years ago this week, my brother Gil, a husband, a dad, a son, a brother, a grandfather, a brother-in-law, an uncle, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, a trooper, a neighbor was taken from us tragically while protecting an innocent life from a dangerous one. So many lives were changed on March 31st 1989. Years have passed yet it seems like yesterday. Though life has moved on, we have all aged, some walk with a limp, our hair has thinned or even changed color. We are blessed to have small miracles running around us bringing smiles to our faces. But there is one thing that hasn’t changed with any of us. There remains a hole in each of our hearts since that fateful day in March that forever brings tears to our eyes that keeps torturing us of that heavy sacrifice this family gave to this great state of Maine. Not a day goes by Gil that you are not in my heart and in my thoughts. You are forever my hero. You are the wind beneath my wings.

With the recent homicide of Cpl. Eugene Cole, I was reminded of the unfortunate killing of Detective Landry. I graduated from MCJA in 1982 and this incident was particularly devastating for me as a new officer. I have thought of Detective Landry, his family, and the Maine State Police Brothers and Sisters who lost a fellow Law Enforcement officer. I just wanted to visit this site and again, reflect on this tragic loss of life. Rest in peace Detective Landry and know that the proud tradition and standards you lived and died by are still with us today.

Twenty-six years ago today, you were taken from us so tragically. You will always be remembered for your great smile and yes, mischievious smirk. Losing you left a great void in all of us, but knowing you are in a great place softens the pain. You will always be my hero and the wind beneath my wings.

Twenty five years have come and gone since Friday March 31st, 1989 - and we still remember and will always remember. I talked w/Denise on 3/23/14 at lunch in Greene, she knew me but I did not recognize her for a minute. Time goes quite fast.

I need to contact others who were there that day, have not been in touch for 5 years or so.

Thanks for your service.

25 years have passed since that fateful day when a part of me died. You were my best friend. You were Starsky and I was Hutch. I'm your baby sister, the one who did every home projects with you and went camp hunting.Rides and Projects have never been the same since. They are done because they need to. If I could have one minute with you I would tell you I'm a better person byecause of you. As the baby sister, I still have a lot of unanswered questions and I will be looking to you for some answers. I hope you are enjoying that great Landry/Theriault family gathering. You are my hero and the wind beneath my wings
