Reflections for Trooper Troy Merle Hogue

Troy, although our time time together at Big Spring PD was short I considered you a good friend. You were one of those guys that was always in a good mood and brought everybodys spirits up when they were around you. You always conducted yourself in a professional manner while on duty and every officer you worked with felt safe when they knew you "had their back". I'll never forget the time we went crusin the park in "Captain Crunch" with the guys. I am proud to have worked with you. You will always be loved and missed. Sleep well my brother until we meet again.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 15th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest In Peace

Trooper Hogue, I did not know you but have heard many great things about you since I have joined the Highway Patrol. I know that you are in the thoughts of many on this date but you will always be in the thoughts of your brothers of the Texas Highway Patrol. You will never be forgotten. Thank you.

Trooper Troy served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, Trooper Troy. My heart goes out to your
loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can.

You were honored on the website today. Thank you for your service and
sacrifice.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had the honor of meeting Troy when I was doing ride alongs with the Howard County Sheriffs Office. He gave me encouragement to continue seeking a career in law enforcement. I was a truck driver then and I remember that night because I passed by as he was being covered. I knew then I had to become a police officer and do my part to insure that others could be safe in their daily lives. I became a police officer and someday hope to return to Big Spring-Howard County and serve law enforcement there. My thoughts and prayers to Troys family, friends and co-workers. May God keep you and your family in his grace, protect your loved ones and give all peace.

Rest in peace my brother. We worked many days together at Big Spring PD. The last time I saw and talked to you was when you came over to Midland to help us with traffic control with the "Baby Jessica" in the well incident. You had just got accepted by DPS and was so happy and proud of your accomplishment, and I congratulated you. See ya one day my friend...Uncle Bob

I was only 14 years old when Mr. Hogue was murdered. I remember vividly the emotions that went through my family at that time. We used to live right down the street from the Hogue family in Big Spring and I remember many conversations between my step-dad and Mr. Hogue. I remember watching the news with my parents that night and the shock that flowed through all of us at that moment. Mr. Hogue was a very nice man and my heart went out to his family. Now everytime I hear of an officer fatality I think of the Hogue family. I pray that everyone is in good health and that they know how many people thought Mr. Hogue was a wonderful man. God Bless!

Troy was my father, and a great one he was! I just happened to come across this page and saw all of the wonderful comments that brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. I was only 9 when my dad died, but I remember many things about him. I remember when he would do his lights on his car for me (his police car) and how he called me his "little red-headed girl." I think about him everyday and talk to him when I pray at night. I miss him so much and only wish I could have had more time with him. I feel he is in my heart and is with me all the time. He would have been 50 August 28th, 2005, and on that day all I could think of was his big birthday party we would be having with the family if he was still here.I am 20 years old now and should graduate May 20th and be an RN. I only hope that when I am a nurse I can deliver the same caring, helpful manner my dad did as a highway patrolman. He was such a wonderful dad, husband, and every other title he ever was. Dad I love you so much~ love, "your little red-headed girl."

I remember many a good chat with Troy. He was always ready to give you a minute (that frequently ended up being numerous minutes/hours) and offer you a word of encouragement or advice. The last time that I had the pleasure of seeing Troy was while I was visiting in 1986. We had our usual great time visiting. Rest in Peace my brother. I have many great memories. Thanks Troy.

Dear Troy

I remember the years we worked together at BSPD back in the early 80's. You were my Sergeant at the time. You went on to DPS and I moved on to Grand Prairie PD. I will never forget the night I was at home and saw that you had been killed from the news. I still have you in my memory and keep a picture of you in my office along with a your name that I took off the National Memorial when I was in Washington D.C.

Another brother in blue was killed this last week here at Grand Prairie and it is just another reminder of all the bad that is in the world. Althought I know there are also good christian people because I remember all the outpouting of support at your funeral and that we got at his. But I know that I pray that I can see you both again someday in heaven. I pray for both of you and Sergeant Greg Hunter's family. In the mean time may the good lord keep you in his arms until we meet again.

Warrior!.....

I must say that after all these years you still bring a smile to my face but also make my heart sad knowing that you are not with us here on this earth. I will never forget your first day in uniform at the Big Spring Police Dept and all the times we had together there. I never knew of one person that ever spoke a bad work about you. Thats in its self says alot. I know that some people that read this probably never knew you but i can just imagine that if it were possible that you would put your arm around that kid and tell him that you have no grudge and that you loved him. That is the kind of Man you were. I pray for his soul and pray that someday we will all meet again and sit by the Throne of God with that kid and he can see that smile that we all miss. Thanks for the Good times and I thank God that with His promise there are many more to come. Wait for me by the gate cause im coming when my watch is over or the great trumpet sounds. Love Ya and think of you often.

TROY HOGUE WAS MY UNCLE. HE WAS A WONDERFUL MAN WHO ALWAYS PUT HIS FAMILY FIRST. HE WAS ALSO A GREAT HIGHWAY PATROL. WHEN HE WAS KILLED IT WAS DEVASTING TO US ALL TO LOSE SUCH A GOOD MAN. HE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE ON HIS FACE THE THING I REMEMBER ABOUT HIM MOST HIS HOW MUCH HE USE TO LAUGH AND LOVE LIFE. I SEE MY UNCLE NOW THROUGH THE WAY MY GRANDFATHER LAUGHS AND HIS SMILE. I NEVER KNEW THE IMPACT MY UNCLE HAD ON MANY PEOPLES LIVES UNTIL HE WAS KILLED AND PEOPLE WROTE HIS WIFE TO TELL HER ALL THE WONDERFUL THE THINGS HE HAD HELPED THEM WITH AND A COUPLE SAID HOW HE HAD CHANGED THEIR LIVES JUST BY ONE STOP, PEOPLE SAID MY UNCLE CHANGED THEIR LIFE. I NEVER RELIZED HOW PEOPLE COME IN AND OUT OF THE WORLD SOME CHANGE THINGS FOR THE BETTER AND OTHERS JUST STAND BY AND WATCH. MY UNCLE WAS ONE WHO CHANGED PEOPLE HE LOVED HELPING PEOPLE OUT. I attended Trooper Hogue's funeral and though I didn't know him personally I feel a spoecific kinship to him. At the time of his murder I was a police officer in Midland, a city about 45 miles west of Big Spring where Trooper Hogue was killed. I was a new rookie officer and the death of a collegue sincerely affected my outlook on my job. I have never seen such an outpouring of care and concern than at Trooper Hogue's funeral. There must have been thousands of people there and I believe that showed how much of an impact he had made on the people and community of Big Spring during his life there. I pray for his soul every day and I know that Levi will have to face God almighty for his judgement. My continued condolences to Trooper Hogues family. I am honored to have such a kinship with such a great man.
