My name is James W. King. The name Charles W. King is clearly visible on the memorial wall of San Francisco police officers that lost their lives in the line of duty that is featured at the beginning of the movie "Dirty Harry". Thank you for your service and ultimate sacrifice Officer King. RIP

Ofc. Charles King #596 joined the SFPD in 1906 (apparently there was a mass hiring at the time). The ODMP listing above reflects that Ofc. King was survived by two sons. This is false.

Before he joined, he was a trolly car driver on Market Street. In Aptil of 1906, he and his wife, Georgia Miller King, celebrates the birth of their first child, Charles Jr. At that time, new mothers were kept in the hospital for much longer than today, however, there was also medical necessity as Georgia didn't stop bleeding after childbirth. Doctors finally approached her and told her that due to her bleeding and very small stature, she would need to have a hysterectomy as having another child would very likely kill her. Suddenly, the great quake of 1906 hit. The chimney of the hospital fell through the hospital and bricks exploded in all directions. Georgia, weak from blood loss and from being on bed rest, struggled to get out of bed, took hold of her newborn son, and carried him as she walked straight down Market Street to the Ferry Building where she went to Alameda for 3 weeks. During that time, Charles had no idea where they were, let alone if his family survived the earthquake.

Because of the great quake, Charles and Georgia went on to have another son, a third that died at two, 2 miscarriages, and then my Grandmother.

Rest in peace, great grandpa. I'm a Lieutenant now and proudly wear your star number 596.

I'm sorry I never got to meet you, Grandpa. I heard many stories about your bravery and loyalty to the Department over the years from Grandma and Dad. You'll always be a hero to our family.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 78th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.
