Reflections for Sergeant Gordon R. Joinville

Officer Joinville was a good man. I was also in Vietnam when he was killed. He'd been my Juvenile Probation Officer and was a straight shooter.

Sharing today's Facebook post from the San Mateo Police Department: This morning our Honor Guard joined others from San Mateo County law enforcement agencies at the San Mateo County Fallen Officers Memorial in Redwood City. We paid tribute to both San Mateo PD Civil Service Officer Stephen Clark, who was killed in the line of duty in August 1956 and Sergeant Gordon Joinville, killed in May 1968. We remember their sacrifice today and always. To learn more about these officers, visit www.cityofsanmateo.org/2775/Fallen-Officers

You are not forgotten.

On this anniversary of 9/11 thoughts of first responders came to the forefront of my mind. I grew up in San Mateo Village with an infamous last name and a police officer by the name of Gordon Joinville was possibly the only law enforcement person who believed in a future life for me. On numerous occasions he picked me up off duty after curfew and took me to his home to sober up this out of control teenager. He visited me in his spare time at Hillsdale High School and Hillcrest Youth Detention Facility to make sure I was keep[ng up on my school work. I was heartbroken when I learned of his death while serving a tour in Vietnam. I think he would have been proud to know I never made it to prison like many of my close friends, graduated from college with honors, married a great woman and have a son and daughter in law who have been in law enforcement for a combined total of over thirty years. May he always rest in peace and will never be forgotten for changing my life forever.

She said I have to get home and get. dinner ready ,then her world was never the same .Mine neither, you were my hero, and I've never forgotten you. RIP

Working with you was an honor for me.
Taking the judo class with you was fun. The 50th anniversary is coming. I surely miss you as many people do. I apologise for being late that day in May. God Bless you.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 44th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. I hope to one day meet your family at a NORCAL COPS function.

Rest In Peace.

On the 41st anniversary of Sergeant Joinville's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Sergeant Joinville is not forgotten.

Gordon, I was just a rookie cop that you didn't know. One week you visited us at our Police Science class at CSM. The next week you were gone. It changed all of us and you will never be forgotten.
