Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Dwayne Janey

Rest in peace always knowing that your memory, service and sacrifice will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren.

To your niece Sara, thank you for all you did to make sure a ruthless, disgusting human being stayed where he belonged. I'm sure it was more than challenging in a system that doesn't always seem to favor the good during a time when the evildoers are painted as the victims, but you persevered for the sake of your uncle and for all of LE everywhere. As I mentioned above, your uncle will never be forgotten and may God Bless you and all of your family.

On the 31st anniversary of your murder I sit here feeling a small sense of victory. I did what I set out to do. I fulfilled a promise I made to Mawmaw Janey...I kept the man that killed you behind bars until he died. I wasn’t alone in my efforts. The brotherhood and community you served had a big role in helping me. They have never forgotten you and the new ones who came after you are reminded of your legacy at every turn. My heart still aches from your absence and today it hurts more than usual. I love you and I miss you more than I’ll ever be able to express. I hope you’re in heaven watching over us and that somehow I have made you proud. Until we meet again...#OHC

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

There is no picture here, yet I can still remember this Officer's face ... he was that sincere in his efforts to serve our community, and that memorable as an individual.

He was killed only yards away from our farm, while attempting to prevent yet another act of arson and insurance fraud by those responsible for his death.

They have each been convicted of their crimes under the laws of man, and will each be Judged according to the Laws of God when their day comes ... Justice served, both in this life, and in the next.

Hope to see you again, old friend, when my own day comes.
