Reflections for Officer Timothy James Jones
You can take all your stars and bars and ribbons and gold shields and put them in a drawer. It's not the glitter but the man who keeps on coming even under fire that I want at my side when the nightmare happens. Nip you were that guy and we are all a little bit better people for knowing you. Without a second thought you made the ultimate sacrifice.

Saw the story on animal planet. Such a sad thing. But thank you both Tim Jones and Laser for your bravery. You will truly be missed and remembered for being so brave.

Officer Jones and Laser made the utmost sacrifice that a K-9 officer and his companion can make. St. Paul lost a dedicated pair of professionals. After seeing the remembered in a program about the St. Paul K-9 program I wanted to remind his family and fellow officers that even after almost seventeen years he is still with them. May Officer and K-9 rest in peace and always watch over their successors.

I saw your story on Animal Planet's "K-9 Cops". It was obvious that your are still missed & loved by your family and your co-workers. Your agency thought enough of you to name their K-9 Training Facility after you--what an honor!
I hope you and Laser are still patrolling together, only now in Heaven. Walk a beat on Heaven's street, you've done your time in Hell!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Jones:
Many years ago when I was a young officer, I had the honor to meet you at a regional K-9 officer mtg. Being the truly seasoned professional that you were, you offered to help me in anyway you could to establish a K-9 unit at my department.
I was horrified the day that I heard of your murder as you and your K-9 were attempting to locate the scum bag who did the cowardly act of executing our brother Officer Ron Ryan that morning.
May your executioner rot in prison. I hope that you rest in peace as you so deserve it for your bravery. You are a hero that I am so glad to have met.

As a young law enforcement student, I was privileged to have an internship with the St. Paul K9 Unit. During many ride-alongs, I formed a friendship with several members of the unit. There was kind of a cocky guy named "Nip" that used to razz me alot. He was tough on the inside but would melt at the mention of one of his children. Eventually, along with his close K9 buddy Officer Pat, I joined the duo on several K9 training adventures in the state. The twosome were most definitely the witty warriors of the K9 unit. Oh the fun I so remember! When I saw the news report in live action on the day Nip lost his life . . . I simply remember having a guttural pain when a newscaster broke in to report a K9 officer had been murdered. I knew it was someone I knew. To learn it was Nip was devastating. Seeing Pat's pain with the loss of his best friend was as unbearable. Life changed for so many people on that one fateful day. I will long remember Nip's funeral as his comrades made the long carry up the Cathedral stairs and a lone K9 dog cried in the silence. There was beauty and deep sadness in the sight of mounted Canadian police, and many honor guards and thousands of officers and people lining miles of roadway to say: "Thanks Nip!"
Yes, Nip, the memories are long . . . you are not forgotten! You gave it your all!

At SPPD, the highest compliment an officer can receive is to be called a "Cop's Cop" by his colleagues. A Cop's Cop. Truly this was Tim Jones.

Tim was a cop everybody looked up to. I was across the street when the fatal shots rang out and Tim was out of my sight. Tim was fearless and starting checking this location when others had left. I was covering the wide perimeter we had set up to nab the killer of another officer Ron Ryan earlier that morning. I remember Tim exiting his car and standing with his K-9 Laser looking around the whole area before proceeding. approx 10 mins later the killer had fatally shot Tim & his K-9 while hiding in a fish-house nearby with officer Ryans gun. The coward was found an hr later or so hiding under some plywood and throw his weapons next door from the area he was found. The worst day of my career to loose these two friends. Everytime I reflect I can still hear those shots. Tim & Ron will be forever in our hearts. The K-9 unit has named the unit in memory of Tim Jones. He was quite a guy and didnt seem to be afraid of anything. Bless his family he left behind.A local artist created a painting in Tim , Laser and Rons memory called HEAVENS GATE. A copy is posted at the East side Team office. Tim thanks for being a cops cop and backing me up on my calls. Officer Rennie Renteria Sq 322 {ret} 7-25-02.
