For Officer Kenny Wallace,

I never met Officer Wallace. He paid the ultimate price almost 30 years ago while serving the City of Hampton. I visit his grave frequently to honor him and speak his name. Officer Wallace will not be forgotten. “Beati pacifici”.

I didnt know you, but you were a friend of my mom's when I was a baby, so you probably knew of me. We all lived in the same apartments. I just learned of the story that happened to you. My mom passed away in 2005 so I like to hear stories of her past. I know you were a great man and a wonderful police officer. You certainly have left a good impact on my family who speaks highly of you. Rest in peace.

Just nights before (it may have been the night before) this happened, I responded to a shoplifting call with Kenny. The shoplifter had grabbed a 6 pack of beer and struck the clerk with one of the bottles as he was leaving (so I guess technically it could have been a strong arm). We both got into foot pursuit of the guy (a young kid) and he dusted us. Kenny started laughing as the kid disappeared in the distance (without dropping a single beer) as these two young officers (him and me) were left trailing and gasping for breath. Kenny's laugh was infectious. He always had a way of making you smile. Great guy who will always be missed.

I was only 13 at the time when this happened but the memories still remain. Such a very sad incident for Officer Wallace. I heard a lot of very positive things about him.

I remember that night very well. I lived on Pocahontas Place and had just called my sons upstairs. Not 5 minutes later gun shots rang out. Within moments my yard and the street was swarming with first responders, medics and law enforcement personnel. I have never been so frighten in my life especially when I saw them taking Officer Wallace out of his patrol car .... then eventually covering his lifeless body with a sheet. I had just moved to Hampton. Officer Wallace would make it a point to speak to the residents and made me feel at ease being new to Virginia. My life changed since that horrible night - I trust no one now. Thank you Ofc. Wallace for your service for taking time with my sons - talking with them. You will never be forgotten.

It is always the good ones that get killed before their time. I believe any offender guilty of causing an officers death should get mandatory death penalty! RIP.

Thanks for not giving me a ticket, that in buck roe, when I was fishing at night without a license. You asked me "what did you catch" and I said before thinking I was going to jail " a couple of croakers" but you said " Now that's good eating " and you told me to wrap it up and then you moved on, and you left a impression on me of kindness that I still believe in.

They should have made those juveniles witness the execution of the adult. Make them realize that they would have been right next to them if they were a few years older.

I have often thought about you and your family since that awful day that someone selfishly took your life. You were one of the best neighbors to me and my son. I was a single mother, but I felt so safe knowing that a Police Officer lived so close to us. You were such a nice and funny person. You would give anything to anyone. I often tell the story to people about how I had been recalled into work in the wee hours of the morning. I was going into the bathroom and there was a huge cricket...which I was terribly afraid of! I didn't know what to do, but I knew that I only had a short amount of time to get into work. So, I knocked on your door to ask you to come and get rid of it for me. After you realized that I was very serious, you came over and took care of it. I will never forget how silly I felt about it later asking you to do that. But, it was either me or the cricket and duty was calling. You never let me forget it either. You really loved your family and I pray that God has helped them to heal over the years. I know that you have been truly missed. Continue to rest in peace! Love you old neighbor!

It does not seem like it but twenty years ago, I lost a good friend and the citizens of Hampton lost a good officer. I am sorry I was not there for you my friend. It was with tears that I had the priviledge of standing the Honor Watch those last couple days. I trust, that at some time in the future, we will meet again and then you can tell me the answer to the question I asked you in the hospital room.
