Reflections for Wildlife Officer James R. Fields
James Fields was my great uncle and the man who taught my father to hunt. The account as it is written here is incorrect according to family members, friends and contemporary news articles. According to those sources, Uncle James was killed at night after he and his partner confronted two men who were hunting illegally. One surrendered and the other ran. Uncle James pursued the fleeing suspect, Broward Larkins, a man with whom he had at least one prior confrontation. Larkins stopped, waited in the darkness and shot Uncle James with buckshot. Uncle James's .45 was still holstered beneath his leather jacket when the body was found. Larkins was convicted of his murder and sent to prison.
