Reflections for Corporal Ronald Lee Fewell

Rest in peace Corporal Fewell.

I just want to say that my father is Dale Connolly, Sr., the man who killed Ronald Fewell and that as his daughter, I am forever sorry for his actions that night in 1983. There are truly no words that can ever express our familys sorrow at the actions of my father that night. I'd like to say thank you, Ronald for responding to my mothers aid that night and while I never knew you, you have always remained a hero in my heart.

Ronnie I sure miss you bud. I will never forget you or that night on scene. I came across the news footage of the incident recently that your brother Donnie had. We were so young.

Your daughter has grown up to be a wonderful beautiful woman and wife. I am so proud of her. I know you are.

I will never forget you my brother.

The Sheriffs of Florida and their deputies will never forget the sacrifice you and your family made to uphold our laws and protect society.

Your name has been inscribed on the Florida Sheriffs and the National Law Enforcement Memorial and in our hearts. May you forever rest in peace.

A scripture inscribed on the Florida Sheriffs Law Enforcement Memorial:

"Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called the children
of God." Matthew 5:9

I didn't know Ronnie, but worked with his brother Donnie at the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Donnie is a great guy and I know that Ronnie was surely the same. May God continue to bless this family until they all rejoin again on the other side.

Even though it has been a long time I think of Ronnie often.

I went to high school with Ronnie, Donnie and Vicky. I remember seeing Ronnie around town in his patrol car and hanging out with Ronnie, Donnie and Vicky at their family gas stations. Ronnie loved to hear the sound of the 4-barrel carb. on his patrol car and would open it up as he would leave for a call, you could hear it for blocks.

I followed Ronnie into law enforcement and was at the hospital that awful night in 1983. The funeral was my first as a Law Enforcement Officer and to this day I attend the funerals of fallen Officers from my surrounding agencies as a way to remember and honor the memory of Ronnie.

You are missed.

Ronnie--I looked up your name today because I came across your family while researching Lee County families. I went to high school at the same time as you and your brother, and have never forgotten your sacrifice. God bless.

Ronnie,
even though I was young when God took you from us, I have fond memories of you and Teresa watching us when my parents went out of town. We would have such a blast at your parents house. We had such a blast in the pool. Lol. It hurts my heart when I think about that wednesday night. Know that y9ou are so loved and truly missed.

You and your family, (some of whom I've met), have been in my thoughts today. Twenty five years is a very long time to be apart from someone you love.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Ronnie was not only my brother in law but my close friend and confidante. I have made sure my boys know what a wonderful uncle they had and how he loved being a deputy. Terry and I will always love and miss you. We keep a picture up and also always let people know we also have a hero in our family. You are not here for us to touch but you are here with us in all we do Ron. I MISS YOU!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Fewell family, as they remember that fateful day 22 years ago that changed their lives forever. My son was less then 2 weeks old that day, and his watch ended almost one year ago. I cannot imagine the grief you have endured for all those years.
