Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Michael Ray Jennings

Jennings as I fondly called you...always looked out for the 911 communications departments. He would stop by donuts or to see if we had eaten. He was an outstanding officer...always volunteering for volunteering for calls. His last call for service, he volunteered for the call. You are so loved and missed. Phyllis Starks

Michael J was a high school classmate of mine at North Forsyth. He was always friendly and just had a nice personality. We were both on the track team at North. We met again after high school during the WSPD physical fitness assessment to become a police officer. I remember Michael had finished first in the distance run part of the assessment. RIP and I salute you for your service.

Dear Dad, I often come to this page just to reflect on a picture of your face and to see you in uniform I often reflect on how my life would be if you were here I always wanted to be a daddy's girl you passed away when I was 10 years old! 4 days after my mom's birthday I will always remember you stopping by my grandma Ernestine house on Butterfield dr. visiting me I remember the feeling of excitement and joy coming upon me every time I saw you step out of your patrol car in uniform approaching the house you were so tall I would hug your leg and wouldn't let go as you walked in the house I will look up at you and you will look down at me and ask me do you know who I am and I replied yes you are my daddy and you said how do you know and I said because I look just like you then you smiled so brightly embraced me with hugs and kisses.. I remember my grandmother your mother what always sit by the her front door in her chair with her robe on in her satin cap on her head I remember she would pull me up in her lap and tell me that she was my grandmother.. I wish I could have known the side of my family more but I will always have these memories and much more!! I know you are above watching over me and your 2 grandson micah who is 1years old looks just like you dad and he always plays with his police car which freaks me out how much he loves it! miles is 2 years old and is very tall like you.. we love you dad r.i.p....

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 19th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state and the birthplace of my son. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today.

Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It is ironic that today, the 14 anniversary of your death, I went to the BLET graduation for the Winston-Salem Police Department. A whole new group of officers are ready to go out and patrol the streets you dedicated your life to. I pray none of them will meet your fate. Thank you for your sacrifice, watch over the new rookies and keep them safe.

~~~Eternally and Always~~~
I didn't get to say goodbye
You're gone without a reason why
I've loved you all of my life
and then you weren't there
I didn't get a chance to say
how much I cared
I can't even remember the tears
that I cried
All I really wanted was to tell you
Goodbye
When I last saw you I felt I wouldn't
see you again
There was a distance between us
that I couldn't explain
You wouldn't look
at me but I could see the tears
in your eyes
If you knew then
You should have told me
Then I could have said
Goodbye
So many words left unspoken
So many hearts left so broken
My love for you is forever
And that will never die
We'll be together always
Our souls are one with God
Eternally and Always
I'll never have to say
Goodbye
I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.
These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
