Reflections for Patrolman James Dowling

I am so touched and honored by the responses for Patrolman Dowling. This is the first time I have seen all of these incredible comments. My maternal grandmother was with the son of Patrolman James Dowling for over 50 years (also named James, as was his son) Patrolman Dowling was a great grandfather to me though I never met him. I heard the stories of Patrolman James throughout my life. When I joined NYPD in 1987, my CO at the time, DI Sheehan, made sure I was able to get his shield and wore it proudly until I retired in 2001. He also helped to get him added to the wall before we both retired, since Patrolman Dowling died while wearing our uniform. Thank you DI Sheehan for this lasting memory our family will have for generations to come.

For all of you who have commented on this reflection and prayed for our beloved great grandfather, James Dowling, our family can't thank you enough. You will always be in our heart. Forever be safe and be well.

I said a little prayer today for Patrolman Dowling and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

Dear Patrolman Dowling,
I was assigned to the 25th Pct for about 9 years (1985-1994), and never knew about your line of duty death until today. Working the steady 12 x 8, I passed by the location of E119 & 1st Ave where you were killed countless times on many a night. Sorry that happened to both you and your family on of all days-Christmas Eve. Rest in Peace

I AM SURE THAT PATROLMAN DOWLING WAS SOME DISTANT RELATIVE - PROBABLY A SEVERAL TIMES REMOVED COUSIN, ETC. I SEE THAT HE DIED ON CHRISTMAS EVE WHILE ON PATROL PROTECTING THE CITIZENS OF NEW YORK. I WAS BORN 12 YEARS AFTER HE DIED AND SERVED NEARLY 33 YEARS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT - 31 OF THOSE YEARS WITH THE HUNTINGTON BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT. GOD BLESS PATROLMAN DOWLING & LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS EVERYWHERE WHO GIVE THEIR LIVES IN SERVICE TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. SIGNED - JAMES DOWLING -

JAMES DOWLING - DETECTIVE (RET.)
