Officer Dieken was the second DPD motorcycle officer to be killed on "The Widow Maker". This Harley Davidson motorcycle was numbered "13"and according to the Dallas Morning News of the time,was considered unlucky by many DPD officers,and some had refused to ride it.The machine had been involved in several accidents prior to May 1935,when DPD Officer Leonard was killed on the bike that month after being hit by an elderly man,as Leonard was chasing a speeder in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas.
Officer Dieken in August 1935,was escorting fire trucks near Fair Park in south Dallas when he was hit by a lady who had run a stop sign. The motorcycle caught fire as Dieken lay unconcious nearby. As fireman and police attempted to revive Dieken,they also saw that the intense flames had burned off the number "21" on the "pedestrian cutter",on the front fender reveiling that that it was actually "13". The city had rebuilt the bike and renumbered it! The Dallas Morning News reported that the police department had decided to destroy the motorcycle after the second tragic accident.
Some say the bike is still stored away somewhere in Dallas.
Officer Dieken's son,who was only a few days old when his Dad was killed,is a Sheriff in a large county west of Ft.Worth,and attends the Police Memorial Day ceremony in Dallas each year.
