Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Randy Loy Davis

I am not a peace officer, but hold them in the highest possible regard. I was the radio announcer that broke the story of Sgt. Davis in Longview that night. It has stuck with me for years. I grieve with not only his family, but the whole Longview PD. RIP, Sergeant.

It has been 36 yrs. ago since Randy left us.
He an I attend classes at the ETPA, and consulted on cases.
His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and made us a lot more careful over the years.
I had been in Law Enforcement ten years when this happened, and four months later nearly lost My life in an encounter where a suspect tried to take My weapon.
I think of Randy often, and credit Him, and Officer Marshall Sowders in making think before I acted, and allowed Me serve until 2003 When I retired after 30 yrs.
He, and His Family will never be forgotten. RIP Brothers.

Cant believe its been thirty two years not since we got a SWAT call out due to a barricaded suspect that had shot Randy. Thankfully the suspect gave up prior to our deployment. Randy was my SWAT Sergeant weeks prior to transferring to the Narcotics Division and we all couldn't believe this had happened. After all these years I still think about him. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers along with the peace officers across our nation putting their lives on the line each day.

I've never met you, but I recognize they type of Sgt you must have been. I am a retired 30 year Sgt, 22 on a motor with cop funerals aplenty. Heart wrenching every time.
Now my son has joined Longview PD, and as a child attended numerous funerals of slain officers. In honor of your ultimate sacrifice that should never be forgotten, he hopes to create a perpetual award bearing your name, for officers performing at levels exemplified by you, Randy. May your sacrifice reside in the hearts of those who follow your dedication to this community.

It is hard to believe that it will 30 years on Jan 27 that you were killed. Janette and myself were driving by your house that evening when we seen some of the brass going up to the house and wondered what that was about. It was not until later that I got a call that said that you had been killed.
I can still remember the last time I seen you when I was sitting in the break room and you were walking by and you pooped in to say hi and to talk a few minutes
You are not forgotten my brother

Randy was my older cousin. My first memory of Randy was how he would always protect me from my big brother. The only way I can picture him is smiling. He was a great man. He has been missed beyond description.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 28th anniversary of your death.. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was 13 years old when this happened, and I remember it like it was yesterday. My mom was dating a Gregg County deputy at the time. I asked him all sorts of questions. He was good enough to answer them, with much candor. I think that is why I chose to devote my life to serving as well. Heroes like Sgt Davis made it possible for me to pursue my dreams also. Thank you Sgt Davis. I will never forget you.

I cant believe it has been over twenty one years since this tragic situation.
Randy was my Sergeant while on the SWAT Team and transfered to the Narcotic Unit just months prior to the shooting.
Randy was a hands on get in there and do the job person and set an example for us all.
Randy was a good leader and looked upon with respect within our Department.
I keep Randy and the other fellow Officers within our Dept and all Officers across the Nation in my Thoughts and Prayers daily.
I miss my friend.

Although I was only a 16 years old when you left us I remember it well. That same motel is still a thorn in the side of law enforcement to this day. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and the LPD. May you rest in peace brother.

To The Family, Friends and Those Who Remember,

Much can be recalled about the death of Sgt. Randy Davis, but much, much more can be recalled about his life and what he meant to others.

At the time of his death I was serving as a Paramedic Supervisor in Longview and now I am a member of the Police Department where he so faithfully and unselfishly served. There are some still on the Police Department who served with Randy and are able to say that their lives are more enriched for knowing him.

We all miss him, but are carrying on in his memory.

May the Lord Bless and Keep all of You,

In His Name,

Jack H. Lanier, Jr.

I met Randy at school and deeply admired his dedication to his profession and to his family. I was working for the Dallas Police Dept when Randy was killed. My heart sank when I heard the news. Randy was a good man and he is sorely missed.
