So easy to know so little about the past. Gone but not forgotten. A sacrifice, and a man, remembered. Loved.

My father was the bank manager at the Alhambra Savings & Loan on that fateful January day in 1964. He told me often how much of a hero Sergeant Davis was that day, and when I hear comments about how law enforcement put their lives on the line for us each and every day, I think often of Sergeant Davis. RIP, Sir.

It has been over 50 years since Sergeant George Davis was shot and killed during a bank robbery in the City of Alhambra. I was a young police officer for the City of Alhambra and still in the FTO program when this tragic incident occurred. Sergeant Davis was a very brave and dedicated police officer. I read the reflection from his granddaughter, Brandy Sharp, and would like her to know that he was a good man and that I am not surprised that his sons grew up to be “wonderful” men and that the family can say the same about Sergeant Davis. I think the Davis family can be very proud of their father and grandfather. Brandy, it sounds like everything you heard about your grandfather was true, you can be proud of his dedication and bravery. I feel privileged to have known Sergeant Davis, even though for a very short time, and proud to say I served with him for the City of Alhambra.

Sergeant George Davis is my grandfather that I never got to meet. I hear wonderful stories about him from my grandmother. I wish I could have met him, but I know he has two wonderful sons one of which being my father. He would be very proud of the men they have become, and their families. RIP xoxo

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 48th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, not even 48 years. I am sure that you are proud that you son continued your legacy of protecting and serving.

Rest In Peace

Officer Scott Willson, I worked with your father, Jim Willson, with the Alhambra Police Department, 1963 to 1966. He was a mentor for me. I also knew Sergeant George Davis. He was very impressionable, tall, thin, and smart and ironically taught my academy class on how to respond to robbery in progress. Sergeant Davis was killed by Jesse James Gilbert at American Savings one day before my own father died. Your father was a motor officer when I was in high school at AHS and a Juvenile Officer when I was with APD. He taught me a lot about police work. I have thought of your father often, especially when I taught at Sacramento City College, giving many of his war stories to my students. I am very happy you followed his footsteps, like my son did, John Carriger, Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff's Office. I also check George’s marker when I am at the California Peace Officer Memorial and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington DC.

I remember Sgt Davis. I met him when I was a boy. My Father, Jim Willson, was an Alhambra Police Officer. I followed in his footsteps, joining APD in 1978. For the last 5 years I have been on a police honor guard. I always visit Sgt. Davis' memorial marker at the Police Memorial Service in Sacramento.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I joined the Alhambra Police Department in October 1962. Sgt. Davis was one of the instructors in our Academy. His instruction included "response to 211 in progress calls" which is really ironic. George was an extremely confident individual and had the ability to communicate with everyone. It was extremely unfortunate that he had to come across "Jesse James Gilbert" a three time loser who didn't want to return to jail. I thoght about George my entire 31 year career at Alhambra P.D. He was sorely missed by all who knew him.

Sergeant Davis taught my academy class on responding to armed robberies in progress. I gave that same lecture to many students throughout the years. I kope it saved a few officers from death or serious injury. I had been in the field less than one month when he was killed at the bank. His death left a lasting impression on me. Sargeant Davis was a great supervisor and officer.
