Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Chief Investigator Thomas Wayne Daughdrill, Sr.

BY E. E. CUMMINGS
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Detective Daughdrill took me under his wing when I was a freshman at Pearl High School. He was a mentor and male role model in my life when I needed it most, and he encouraged my love for law enforcement. I searched his name many times over the years and only recently found out about his death. The news was like a punch in the gut, but it is nice to see that so many people thought so much of him. Tommy was a good man, and he will never be forgotten as long as those whose lives he touched remain alive. I hope his family reads the tributes to him and knows how much he was loved and respected. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of his passing, and I would love to see something done to honor his memory and his sacrifice.

I was the victim of a robbery in summit in 1989 Tommy was the lead investigator on my case and a good friend. Even though my attacker was never apprehended he made sure I was protected.

I had the honor of working with Tommy at the Pearl Police Dept. Just before he was killed he came by to visit us and he was so proud that he was going to be baptized. I am so glad that he found his Lord and Savior.

A senseless tragedy that should never have occurred, had the Court System functioned properly.
I was on duty that day and never will I forget seeing my friend and mentor laying there in the rain of Hurricane Andrew.

When I began my law enforcement career as a reserve deputy sheriff in 1988-1989 Tommy Daughdrill used to let me ride with him. He taught me a lot about working the backroads of our rural county alone. I went on to have a long service in Pike County law enforcement and I never forgot what Tommy did for me personally or the sacrifice he gave in losing his life trying to apprehend a teenage burglar. He was a good man that should have grown old with his family instead of getting killed at age 41. I remember numerous things Tommy did for people that showed the human side of the man and not just the law enforcement officer. He did a lot of favors for people over the years. For me and many others.

Daddy I miss you and need your wisdom. You called me your Pearl and I had you wrapped around my finger. If only i could go back in time. I cherish all the memories, smiles, laughs, tears and your favorite going to Disney World. I wish my kids kids could know the beautiful man and Hero you are and always will be. I know your watching over us as faithful as always. My Protector, My Strength, My Daddy

The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember Tommy. He never boasted, never bragged. He lived devoted to his family and his career. Simple and uncomplicated, yet insightful and resourceful. I remember talking to him the week before his death, and how he seemed to almost glow when he spoke of his wife and children.

Rest easy brother, I carry a little bit of you with me each and every shift. You will never be forgotten.

A fellow peace officer
