Reflections for Senior Corporal Billy Walter Daugherty

To the family and loved ones of Senior Corporal Billy Walter Dougherty and his fellow officers with the Dallas Police Department:

On this the fourteenth anniversary of Bill's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Bill, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by loved ones and friends. Bill's valor and courage will never be forgotten.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

I am so sorry that Bill was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Bill gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 14, 1992.

I KNEW DOUGHBOY FOR MANY YEARS. HE WAS A LOVING FATHER. HE ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF LIFE TO THE FULLEST. I STILL THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE "OLD TIMES" AND THE FUN EVERYONE HAD WHEN HE WAS AROUND. MY HUSBAND AND I ATTENDED HIS FUNERAL AND I WAS TRUELY AMAZED AT HOW LOVED AND HOW MISSED HE HAS BEEN. GOD BLESS YOU DOUGHBOY FOR MAKING EVERYONES LIFE YOU TOUCHED A LITTLE BETTER.....

Billy, it has been along time since that terrible day in 92, but I have never forgotten. I was a civilian when I met you, I had left the law enforcement family for a few years after I lost several friends in Houston and Corpus Christi. I stopped on 635 one late afternoon to help on an accident, that day I met you and remeber your big hand shake and "Thanks for the help" I was at the funeral that day, you would surely have been proud. Today, I am back in the family again, now working a difficult area of IH 35W South of Fort Worth. I wanted you and yours to know I have not forgotten even after the years. Dallas is never the same when it loses an officer, and that day the lights were much dimmer. On the bright side, you have missed much of the horrific things of our current time, things that have brought great pain and misery to our nation. Take care Billy and remember, nobody ever forgets you.

I was married to Bill for eight years and he gave me a wonderful son, now 19, and memories that will last a lifetime. Even though our son was very young at the time of his father's death, he misses him every day. He has heard, and enjoyed, "Doughboy" stories from everyone he meets who knew his Dad (everyone seems to have at least one, and they always laugh when telling it). He was a good man and a good father.

I used to coordinate the Texas Police Motorcycle Rodeo in Irving and Dough Boy was one of the contestants. He was very well liked and a fine officer to boot.
I was deeply saddened when I learned of his passing.....now 13 years ago. He was a nice guy and I will always remember him fondly.
God's blessings on his family.

Two nights before "Doughboy's" death, my wife and I sat at dinner with Billy in our local Hutchins restaurant. We talked of our 15 year friendship, our times at lodge together, and told my wife of our old days together.

He was going off duty and I was going on duty. We had a good visit together and made plans for the following Monday night when we would, again, go to lodge together for the first time in several years.

Monday came, and the news blaired the reports of the awful motorcycle crash and of the grave condition of my longtime friend. As we made arrangments for his services, his casket was proudly draped with the Texas Flag, his final statement as to the pride he took as a naturalized Texan. An Oklahoma boy, proud of his roots, and proud of his profession. He is still sorely missed by all who knew him.
