Reflections for Patrolman Sidney Crenshaw

Growing up in Orlando in the 50s and 60s I can remember Big Sid Crenshaw on his motorcycle. Like many have said, if you met him you wouldn’t forget him. When all of us were growing up in the 50s and 60s we were taught that the Policeman was our friend. Big Sid Crenshaw was our hero!

Sid paid the ultimate sacrifice. What a horrible tragedy!! Sounds like he was an officer and a gentleman (giant). Thanks Sid for your service.

Sid Crenshaw was one of my father's very best friends. They used to race Harley's on the beach together. As a kid growing up, I remember like it was yesterday meeting him at the prison farm by the incenerator for lunch often.

My memories aren't any more current than that, but I remember what a giant I thought he was. Rest in Peace, Sid. I hope you and dad are swapping lies in heaven together!

As a new member of OPD, it saddens me to see that we lost a great hero. It doesn't matter how long ago or how recent the loss is, it is still a tragic moment for all those who loved, respected and worked with him. I thank you for your service. My condolences to the Crenshaw family. Your memories with him will last a lifetime.

A lot of us went to Colonial High School in the 60s and we all remember 'Big Sid' who kept the peace at the Steak n' Shake on Hwy 50 (Colonial Drive). Everybody loved him. It was certainl a tragedy when he was struck and never could return to the work he loved.

I never had the pleasure of getting to know my grandfather. I often wonder what he was like. I have been blessed to be able to go to several fallen officer memorials and speak with many whose lives he touched. I am honored to be his granddaughter.

SID WAS A MAN THAT ONCE YOU EVER MET HIM, YOU WOULD NEVER, NEVER FORGET HIM. HE WAS A HUGE MAN, TOWERING OVER MOST ALL OF US AND WHEN HE SPOKE, YOU LISTENED OR FACE HIS WRATH AND TRUST ME FRIEND, THATS A WRATH YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO FACE. IF SID SAID DO SOMETHING, DON'T ASK WHY, JUST DO IT. WHEN HE CRAWLED ON THAT HARLEY, HE LOOKED LIKE A GIANT ON A CHILD'S BICYCLE. BUT UNDERNEATH THAT GRUFF AND RASPY VOICE WAS A MAN OF COMPASSION AND LOVE, HE LOVED PEOPLE AND THEY LOVED HIM. HE WAS A, "ONE OF A KIND", AND WILL NOT BE DUPLICATED. HE USED TO WORK OFF DUTY AT THE STEAK-AN-SHAKE ON E.COLONIAL DR. ON FRI. AND SATURDAYS AND NO-ONE, I MEAN NO-ONE GAVE HIM A BLAST, HE WAS FAIR WITH ALL BUT DON'T GET ON HIS BAD SIDE OR YOU MAY HAVE WISHED YOU WERE SOMEPLACE ELSE. I WAS ALSO WORKING THE NIGHT HE GOT KILLED ON W.COLONIAL DR AND SGT. BOB COOKE AND I WERE ASSIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THE ACCIDENT. SID LOVED MOTORCYCLES AND HE PAID THE SUPREME PRICE FOR HIS LOVE, WE ALL HAD THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR THAT MAN. HE WAS TRULY, "A ONE OF A KIND" THAT WILL NEVER BE DUPLICATED AND IT WAS AN HONOR TO HAVE KNOWN HIM.

"Big Sid" was a fixture at the Steak and Shake on E Colonial Drive in the 60's. He kept us teens in line and taught us some of life's greatest lessons about respect and friendship. God Bless you, Big Sid...
