UNFORTUNATELY - THE CONVICTED CRIMINALS , AT THE TIME WERE NOT SENTENCED TO DEATH , BY THE ELECTRIC CHAIR - BUT SPANNED OUT THEIR LIVES IN VARIOUS NEW YORK STATE PRISONS. NEVER - EVER TO SEE THE FREEDOM WE ALL ENJOY . PATROLMAN COOTE , REST IN PIECE.

As an 11 year old boy I remember seeing a shirtless photo in the NY Daily News of Ptl. Coote’s killer with that home made tattoo of “I hate cops” on his chest. That image has stayed with me all these years and the sacrifice made by Ptl. Coote was part of the inspiration for my joining yhe NCPD years later. I salute his memory & the memories of all the other fallen and fondly remember my time with some of the best cops in the world in the NCPD.

Every time I pass that location,Ptl Coots name enters my thought process. I recall the incident and little did I know, that two years later,I would become a mamber of the NCPD. Three weeks ago,I was there. At the time it was a "Hills Supermarket" to the best of my recollection RIP Joe.

Thanks for the reminder, Brian. I doubt the radio system was all that good in 1961. I doubt Joseph Coote had "walkie-talkie" in his time. And I'm sure the bad guys knew it. Law enforcement requires a degree of bravery, but cops back them must've required a bit more to effectively do the job. Joseph Coote was brave to go after multiple opponents. I hope Joe's family know that he has not been forgotten and our thoughts are with his family for the sacrifice they endured then, and still do to this day.

On the 50th anniversary of your death, I left the sixth and drove to Brinkerhoff and Third. I stopped and said a prayer for you. I can't believe your killer was paroled. This is shocking and very disturbing. A sad day for all of us. God bless you !
Rest in peace my brother.
