Hugh was one of the most conscientious deputies I ever had the pleasure working with. He could be counted on to back up his teammates. He alsways gave 100%. One of the finest people I have ever worked with.

Tribute to a Hero

Lord, as we stand here today with others
for a hero to pass this way
Waving flags in the wind, we can hear
the birds sing.
With our hands on our hearts, we give
tribute to a fallen hero.
Kind smiles as we wave, our hands wipe
the tears away, as this hero comes our way.
Even the clouds are dark and heavy today, they
seem to join in with tears of rain on this sad day.
The sound of traffic even was still as you made
the journey to the final resting place.
And as the sun goes down at the end of this day,
God seems to leave a warm sense of feeling
as if to say your hero is with me today.
This reminds me Lord that some day you will return,
and will we stand and be ready?
Lord, put your loving arms and shield of protection
around these other hero's today.
This hero will always be remembered by his friends.
His characteristics, his love for others, and his
kindness and his smile.
He was a hero in every sense of the way. A
real true hero the night he was called away.
He was a hero risking his life for others,
and what he believed in.
But most of all he was a great hero in the
eyes of his son in his deputy garbs.
Now he will be added to all the other hero's

My name if Marlene McClure. We lived in Colorado Springs
the night your dad's life was taken. We did not know your dad
but really felt that he gave his life protecting us all in Colorado Springs. While we stood out on Academy Blvd., I felt God speaking to my heart as the family limo went by and I saw you in the window waving a flag. I wanted to share this poem with you and anyone else who would like one.

Hugh Martin was my shift partner, my car partner, my friend, a terrific father and was soon to be married to a fantastic lady when his life was ended by a drug transporter. Hugh always wore a smile and brought positive energy to his job. It has been a long time since Hugh moved on to a greater patrol district, but I think of him often and I miss him terribly. People like Hugh are never replaced, just cherished and remembered. God bless Hugh!

Deputy Martin,

Right now I am completing my internship with El Paso County Sheriff's Office. I also am working to complete my degree in criminal justice through PPCC. I wish to thank you for your service to this county. I hope to serve soon enough with your brothers and sisters in EPCSO. I will keep your legacy in mind as I strive to become a part of the very agency of which you served so honorably, sir. R.I.P.

Hugh, I was with you the night of the shooting. I was one of the sergeants on the team that night. I will never forget your professionalism as well as your sense of humor as we prepared for that no-knock warrant. We kidded each other and that is how I will remember you. It is April 13, 2012, and has been twenty years since the shooting, but you are not forgotten.

He was the most amazing person in my life. We were very close. He looked out for me at all times. There is not a day that does not go by that I don't think about him, or his son Brandon. My Uncle was not perfect but we were a family, I respected him. He loved his job so much, it is what he wanted to do. To have a job that you love so much that you enjoy everyday makes it worth it. I could not have asked for a better Uncle. I miss him and his son, Brandon if you read this know we miss you and love. Hugh you are my hero to this very day. Thank you for teaching me and being there for me.

On April 13, 1992, I was employed with El Paso County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy Sheriff. I will never forget that deadful day. We were grief-stricken, but had a call-to-duty to fulfil; a greater duty of professionalism, dedication, and oath to protect and serve the one that caused us so MUCH pain. Hugh, you are soley missed, but NEVER forgotten. Your memory lives on in our hearts, and the community you served so faithfully.
