I am the daughter of Hipolito Cardona's third child Lillian. My mother spoke often of the father she never got a chance to know but she always felt that he watched over her throughout her life. She is his only surviving child at this time. She is now 81 years old. His son, my Uncle Joe, recently passed away at the age of 84. Officer Cardona's family was very close and I grew up close to my grandmother(his wife), my aunts, uncle and all the cousins.
I grew up hearing the story about how my grandfather was called in to work on his day off for a gambling raid. Upon entering the house and going up the stairs, he was shot in the head. He died much to young and my grandmother raised his three children alone. Never remarrying. I think he would be very proud of his family. Even though I never new my grandfather, the family has kept his memory alive for many years.

Hipolito was married to Margarita Dosal at the time he was killed by gunshot in the line of duty. He was studying to take the sargent exam. I think he was about 26. At the time they had two children, my mother Aida, son Hipolito Jr. and my grandmother was pregnant with their daughter Lillian who was born 4/8/1926. My Aunt Lillian is still alive. My mother adored her father and remembered how he would come home wearing his police boots. They were from Adjuntas and my grandmother eventually brought the children to New York. The family was devastated by his death. The family's stories always describe a wonderful family man adored by all. There was always sense of loss. If anyone has any info let me know.

South Carolina Highway State Trooper J.A. Cardona pulled me over this morning and charged me with failing to yield to oncoming traffic. The light was green and I turned left on Hwy 521 without properly checking to see if the oncoming traffic was clear. I could have seriously hurt or killed myself. Of course, I don't like getting tickets but his action of stopping and giving me a citation has caused me to reflect of my aggressive driving habits. I'll slow down and drive more carefully from now on.

Thanks Trooper Cardona,
