Reflections for Deputy Kenneth Fredrick Perrigo

Its nearly 2024 now, but exactly 2 days and 33 years since you passed. I didn't know you, I wasn't even born yet when you passed. Your legacy lives on though, you will forever live on through the stories of you and laugher shared by the ones who did know you, and you will forever be remembered as an inspiration, a brave man, a caring and loving father and husband and you will forever be remembered as a hero. Although the ones who did this to you got what deserve, there is no justice that can even begin to repay your family, wife and community for the hero they took from everyone that night. 33 years later, we not only remember you, we share your legacy with our own families and you are remembered even by the youth in your own community to this day. My thoughts and prayers to all of your family, I know that no matter how much time passes it never stops hurting and you are deeply missed officer Perrigo.

I came across the CA Supreme Court's opinion in the criminal case, by chance, during my legal research on other Pitchess motion matters. I was deeply moved by the loss of Dep. Perrigo, despite the somewhat antiseptic tone of the court's discussion, understandably focused as it was on legal issues. I couldn't help but think of my own experiences throughout my adult life as a deputy sheriff, first as a reserve deputy (volunteer) back in 1976, then later on as a regular deputy (1979-1983), and then much later still as a reserve deputy for another county (2003-2012) after becoming a lawyer. I, too, have worked remote county areas alone, back in the day, though not so remote as Shasta County. Everything described, but for the actual shootings, was so familiar. I remember always trying to be careful. I've no doubt Dep. Perrigo was also careful, and fully capable. I'm deeply humbled by how much is simply a matter of chance, of "luck". Probably the only reason I'm even here. God, bless Deputy Perrigo with eternal life. comfort and care for his loved ones. Inspire those who succeed him with ever greater vigilance, especially now in 2019.

I hope people always remember Ken Perrigo. . I know I will. God wiling the border wall will be done and i would suggest a memorial part of the wall showing the names of those in law enforcement who have fallen due to illegal immigration.

I only just came across this page of reflections of Kenn Perrigo; my big brother. The words and memories shared here touch me to the core of my heart. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and his sacrifice. That his family, whom he loved so much, did not get to have him at their important life events. That he did not get to share in how their lives unfolded. Kenn is a hero. He is loved and missed so deeply. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and keeping his memory alive.

On the 18th anniversary of Deputy Perrigo's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Deputy Perrigo is not forgotten.

Dear Sir,

One defendant plead guilty to your murder and was sentenced to life in prison. The other was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in Sonoma County for it. This week a California state appeals court unanimously upheld that verdict and stated, “All of defendant’s claims having been found to be without merit, we affirm the judgment in its entirety.” Unfortunately the justice served will never equal the sacrifice. Rest assured that those two who took your life have been locked away to be forgotten while you Deputy Perrigo are forever remembered. God keep you.

My father went to the academy with you and he often tells me stories of tracking the two men who took your life. He says you were a good friend of his. I was only 3 years old when the event occurred but I remember him being gone until the men turned themselves in. He had to help catch them, out of his respect for you and your family. Thank you for your service. I hope to begin my own service soon and I hope I can serve with honor as you have.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 15th anniversary of your end of watch. You have not been forgotten nor will that ever be the case as you are a true hero and heroes never die. Keep looking down on your loved ones and guide them through life and also keep watch over those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line.
