Reflections for Police Officer Haze Burch

Rest in peace Officer Burch.

Coming into the PPD in 1986, I instantly felt a connection, an almost kindred spirit with the department’s first fallen officer, having the same sir name. This
may have made me uniquely aware of the possibility of getting killed on duty, and honing my officer safety skills to a higher level. In any event, after numerous brushes with death while working as a cop, to include a gunfight with an armed bank robber, I thank the memory of Officer Haze Burch for making me better prepared, keenly aware of the ultimate sacrifice he gave for this community. Rest In Peace brother.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 86th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Last night our squad stood silently at 700 E. Jefferson and honored your memory. It has been eighty five years to the day that you answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice. While none of us had the privilege to know you, we will never forget and you will live on in our hearts.

Brother Haze you are the first recorded hero of our Police Department and unfortunately are not the last. I know that in our Lords house you have met and welcomed our fellow Phoenix PD officers who have also paid the ultimate sacrifice and have joined you in eternal patrol of Gods golden streets. There you no longer face the agents of evil but have the ultimate safety with you. Rest in peace my brother, give all of our brothers and sisters a hug for me until I join you there. God bless all of you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I hope you know you are recognized as one of the first Phoenix Police Officers in history. My FTO told me a great deal of stories about you and some of the interesting capers you came across. You help lay the foundation for the one of the best Police Department's in the country. God Bless and Rest In Peace.

My family has had many law enforcement officers in our family. But like all good families, we have our bad seeds. Last year, I learned of my families bad seeds...4th cousins to me...who were the sorry son's who murdered this fine man and two other police officers. On behalf of my family, I wish to express my sorrow and apologies to the descendants/relatives of this brave fallen public servant. For your info., one of the culprits was hanged in 1926 in Arizona while the other was released from prison in Texas in 1934...I do not know what happened to him.

Probation & Parole

Rest in Peace Brother...you are not forgotten
