I shall never forget that night.; I was one of the first to alert folks here in Southern California that there was an active shooter. Although I did not personally know Charles, He and I had several mutual friends. There were many who I personally-know who were in-attendance at that music festival. Several who my daughter knows were wounded. While appearing as a guest on a Washington, DC area radio show discussing this tragic incident, I was Honored to have A Hartfield Family member unexpectedly-call-in. Having attended so-many law enforcement / armed forces funerals, I now avoid such events, and I regretfully-informed A Family Member that I could not emotionally-handle attending The Home-Going Ceremony. Charles’ Mother found Her Loss so-devastating that She joined Him two days after the Home-Going Ceremony.

May They Both now Rest-In-Peace.

A portion of a letter written by President Abraham Lincoln, printed in the Boston Evening Transcript on November 25, 1864.

“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln”
