For Trooper Joel R. Davis:

The law-officer on-patrol is called to many incidents in the course of his/her tours of duty and one of the most dreaded calls is the domestic argument assignment. None of us know what awaits and it is common to check things out before making our decision on how the call will be handled. Too often the arriving law-officer is met with an enraged person whose first thought is to attack the officer.
Each of us that has handled such calls might be tempted to advise the best approach. While this might appear sound, the simple truth is that often-times the killer strikes from cover, by surprise, and without warning. It is well that each of us heed such actions. Our life is always at stake and the advantage, sadly, does not lie in our favor.
We regret that Joel would meet such a fate. He is but another who was in our place and we survived only through being one among-the-numbers who've answered such calls and we survived more by luck than skill. It is our lot - each of us who wears a badge. It has been the same horrific consequence for ages and, regretfully, will continue.
We pray for Joel's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him.
We proudly render Trooper Joel Davis, a soldier-of-the-law, a proud and final salute.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Once again my heart is broken. We have lost a brother, Trooper Joel R. Davis taken from us way too soon. Although I'm retired from the NYPD, we are all brothers and sisters in uniform serving and protecting communities each and every day. It doesn't matter whether we are law enforcement in New York, New Jersey, or in any other state, we are all family, and today I am truly saddened. May God be with Trooper Joel Davis family providing them with everlasting love, strength, and guidance to help them through this most difficult time. Trooper Davis, I honor your courage, strength, and your life. You are a true hero. Rest in peace my brother.
