Reflections for Deputy Prohibition Officer Leander M. Cook

Leander Cook was my great grandfather. I visited the national monument honoring fallen law enforcement officers in Washington DC back about 1995 and he was not listed. I'm glad that his name does appear on that monument now. R, Donald D. Cook Jr. ([email protected])

Leander Oliver Cook [149068], son of James Madison Cook [198420]1 and Flora Nelson (Twin) Perry [198458],1 was born on 15 Dec 1874 in West Fork, Crook Dist., Boone County, West Virginia, died on 15 Nov 1924 in Van, Crook Dist., Boone County, West Virginia at age 49, and was buried on 17 Nov 1924 in Jasper Workman Cemetery, Bald Knob, Boone County, West Virginia.

General Notes: Murdered In Line Of Duty By F. Boyd.

Another account of Leander Cooks death, is that he died from wounds received in a shootout with another law officer Sam Mays.

My Aunt Joyce (Hager) Mahone has told me the story of how Leander Cook was killed and she said that he went to a house to arrest a man and he ran out the back door and hid in his barn. When Leander approached the barn he started shooting. He returned fire and both were shot. Leander although injured went to a nearby creek and scooped up some water in his hat and went to the mortally wounded man and gave him a drink of water. Leander later died from his wounds.
