Reflections for Sergeant Jason Michael Goodding

I remember Jason when he first started with Seaside PD. The first time I met him, I rode along with him to do a newspaper article on the active community policing which was published in the Seaside Signal a few weeks later. Through the years, I watched Jason's career unfold as he made Sergeant and was happy to harass him a few times over the phone as I continued working as a Police Chaplain for the county.

We remain deeply grieved and saddened that Jason lost his life, but I know that Jason will never be forgotten and his faithful service remains a solid testimony to his dedication to his family and serving the community he loved.

Jason, today marks two years since you were taken away. The last time I got to see you was at Justin's wedding and for that I am thankful. I think about you every single day and am still sad that I will never get to see that smile again. I love you & will see you again someday. Until then, keep showing me signs that you are still here. I love you!!

I remember the day that my wife and I were driving home from a vacation at Cannon Beach. We had no idea what had happened to Sergeant Goodding at the time. We were driving through Seaside when we saw hundreds of people standing along the highway. We kept driving until the road was blocked. A construction crew was stopped in front of us and everyone got out of there vehicles. A few minutes had passed when we began to see law enforcement and emergency vehicles from all over the country driving slowly in a motorcade. At that moment we realized what was taking place. I was so very moved by the gesture of these people who had come to pay their respects, and so very saddened by the tragedy which had taken place to deserve such a respect. I still think about that day, and the family of that brave man. my respect and condolences to the family and friends of Sergeant Gooding, he must have been an amazing person.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Jason was killed.

To the Goodding family, fellow deputies, and all who call Jason beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Sgt. Goodding gave to his community and the citizens of Oregon, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 5, 2016.

One of the best memories I will always have is the 4th of July we worked together. What would have been a night of total chaos actually felt like we helped people, kept many safe, reunited lost children with worried parents and arrested those who were a danger to people enjoying the holiday. Your caring, experience, and low key approach to all those we encountered will always be an example to me of what a great cop should be! Those of us still serving will always have great memories of you and will always have your six.
