Reflections for Police Officer David Joseph Nelson

As I sit here and write about you for a scholarship in your honor, I weep at the loss that we have all endured because you were taken so young. Thank you for your service and I know there are many who strive to be better because of who you were.

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Lived in Burbank and grew up with the Nelson family playing AYSO and was in Boy Scouts with his holder brother.
I never met David but we shared the same passion of serving in L.E.

Revelation 20:12,13 states "I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened;it is the scroll of life. The dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead in it, and death and the Grave gave up the dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds." Officer Nelson provided "good deeds" by serving his community. I pray that GOD's promise of those that have fallen asleep in death bring comfort to Officer Nelson's family, friends, and colleagues.

Thank you for your service. Both our fathers were state policemen but my husband 's father was shot in the line of duty. Joseph died on my birthday. May he always be remembered as a hero. Know they not

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when David was killed.

To the Nelson family, fellow officers, and all who call David beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer David Nelson gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 26, 2015

Their Devoted Spirits have Risen and are now carrying on their destinies up above in Heaven while awaiting to be rejoined in the distant future by the ones they love.

Having been in pursuits and have come awfully close to such a fate, I wish you well as your new chariot awaits. To your family- you have placed no burden of grief upon them brother; merely grief. The burden of your passing shall be rightfully carried by the offender of society. His last chariot shall not be so sweet.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I only met David a couple times, when I worked O.T. on his shift. It was unremarkable in that it was passing and brief. What was not unremarkable was the outpouring of grief I saw from people who were close to David. The services for David made me wish I had known him better. Not because I want to feel the loss more deeply, but because the only way his loss could bring that much grief is if his presence brought that much joy. Thank you, God, for letting us have him, if only for a while. We will keep and honor his memory.
