Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Yevhen "Eugene" Kostiuchenko

This October will be 6 years. I still miss you so much my friend. We went to visit your home land in Ukraine with your beautiful wife and your children. It was a beautiful trip we met up with your Parent’s and brother. They took us to visit your childhood neighborhood and the house you grew up in. Sitting at the table with your family sipping vodka like we would every chance we got with you. Your mom cooked up your favorite dish in that moment reminiscing memories of you we all felt your presence. There was still so much to experience with you being taken the way you were hurts to this day. Please continue to watch over us and know we are still thinking of you and still missing you like crazy. Budma!!

Hi Eugene, I know it has been a while but I still think about you every day. I have dreams and when I see you they feel so real, like you never left. At least in those moments everything is back to normal again. You never got to meet him, but my son was born shortly after you passed away. I named him after you, your actual given name "Yeven". We call him Yev for short. Yev is 19 or so months now, he is growing up so fast. He has quite the vocabulary. You'd be proud. I'm looking forward to the day where I can explain the origin of his name to him. Sad to tell you that Grandma passed away last week, mom is having a hard time with it. Things are slowly changing since you left, we really miss you. See you on down the road.

Eugene, we love and miss you today and every day. It has been a year now and the community has rallied to keep your legacy alive in the form of a highway sign that proudly displays your name. In life your kindness spilled out and touched so many souls and each of us is thankful for all that you have done for us. You have changed my life forever and I will always have 13 years of cherished memories which will carry me through each day.

EUGENE

Raised in a village, no running water, no worry.
Warmed only by a cut log fire at night.
Unaware of heavy snow drifts that bury,
He read novels by the glow of a flickering light.

Filled with conviction at a very young age,
Seeking truth and justice and noteworthy goals,
Hard work and discipline he did engage,
As he trod this earth like an ancient soul.

Blessed with a brilliant mind he was able,
And languages were his special gift.
Russian, Ukrainian and Farsi he brought to the table
As translations between he could easily shift.

As a Ukrainian military attache he traveled abroad,
Coming to the United States on official business.
Lead investigations on an international fraud,
Amply identifying a target, or victim, or witness.

It was here in the land of the Free and the Brave,
That he met his future wife.
Unknowingly it was she that he saved,
As he made her his soul mate....his life.

Leaving his family and beloved country behind,
He took the oath of loyalty and did beam.
Democracy and freedom with delight he did find,
As he lived the American Dream.

He joined the Ventura County Sheriff's employ,
A proud career this he knew
As criminals and drunken drivers he did annoy,
Once he became a dedicated Brother in Blue.

At the height of his earthly existance,
This young man was too soon taken,
God evidently needed him back in an instant,
Leaving us on earth badly shaken.

We will miss his charm, wit, infectious smile,
His generosity and compassionate way.
He always went the extra mile,
And brought us laughter and light each day.

Here on earth we hold on to our dream,
That he watches us from above,
Waiting on the bridge between,
To wrap us once more in his blanket of love.

In loving memory of a wonderful man who only knew goodness and kindness and generously shared it with all who knew him. We love you Eugene and will always miss you.

I just saw the news story on Eugenes memorial service, and his life story, and I was so moved at this amazing man, this amazing immigrant. What an incredible history he had, and the words shared by his loving wife were moving, as was the huge crowd of his fellow officers. I pray for the healing in the hearts of all who knew him. God bless his family, friends and co-workers who are out there helping keep some order in our crazy society!
