BRIDGE, N.Y. - A fallen officer's dream of restoring an old troop car to its former glory has been fulfilled.

A fully-restored 1988 New York State Police Dodge Diplomat was unveiled last week in Chenango Bridge.

Trooper Christopher Skinner had been working on the 30 year-old police cruiser when he was killed in 2014.

Robin Alpaugh, who shared a love of vintage police cars with Skinner, acquired the Diplomat in 2015 and set about finishing the restoration.

Alpaugh and Skinner had originally met at the Spiedie Fest car show.

"He was very excited. I came up and visited him in his barn. He showed me the car and it still had the plastic decals on the back door sills which was kind of neat. And like 40,000 original miles," said Alpaugh.

The vehicle had been retired after hitting a deer and still needed front end work.

Lights and Sirens Limited is owned by Mike Chalson, a former Binghamton Police Officer.

He managed to secure and install period appropriate lights, sirens and radio for the Diplomat.

Christopher's mother, Sharyn Skinner, says her son loved the car.

"I'm so proud that Robin was able to get it and do all this and put it together and give it a new life. It's great," said Skinner.

Alpaugh says he plans to display the car at Spiedie Fest, the State Fair and other shows this year.

Last year, he took it to a number of events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the New York State Police.

I can still see you smiling down on me from your tractor as I finally realized that the tow bar from tractor to hay wagon was extend-able!

I saw Chris' old NYSP car in the Kilmer Building in Binghamton today. It's an '88 Dodge, former Northway unmarked car. It brought a tear to my eye when I realized whose car it was and why it was there. A year later and it still hurts.

I have great memories of stacking bales of hay on the Skinner farm with Chris and his family growing up. As well as playing hockey together on frozen ponds during winter. Chris and his family are some of the finest most caring people I've ever met. Many years have passed, but looking back now those moments with that family are priceless.
