Chris Cortijo was a lot of fun to be around at work. We go back to the early 90’s when we both worked vtd as accident investigators. Young cops full of energy & wanting to write lots of tickets & impound cars. Those were some fun times. Eventually we both made motors & ended up back at vtd after a tour of downtown. I remember working a ticket task force for Sgt John Amott( RIP) & a bunch of us fairly new motors. Chris was one of the group & we were working a speed detail back then using radar. We took turns writing tickets & were all in large group at the same spots nightly. We had code 7 together with John every night & it was a lot of fun. Those were some of the best times I ever had being a motor cop. Eventually the ticket task force was disbanded because of a new captain or something. But I got to work with Chris & his partner Bill on dui watch over the next several years. Those also were some of the best times I ever had. We told jokes all night, made fun of each other relentlessly, & went home with a side ache from laughing all night. I put off writing anything for years because it makes me sad he is no longer here with us. Chris had a work ethic unmatched by anyone I ever knew. He would work till the wee hours & then maybe work a movie job if he could. Sadly Chris passed away the year I retired. I really miss the good old days & wish I had one more night with him & the guys. Rest In Peace my motor brother you are missed by many but never forgotten.

Officer Cortijo’s incident made me reflect about every situation that we may encounter as police officers. We always have to be aware of our surroundings because we don’t know what can happen around the corner. Officer Cortijo spent 26 years of his life dedicated to protecting and serving our community and for that reason he will always be remembered.
Officer Cortijo’s dedication and passion for his career is an example of how every police officer should be. His unfortunate passing should serve as a reminder that this career is not simply a job or an ordinary career path. Just as a career in law enforcement in no ordinary career, officer Cortijo was no ordinary man. His 26 years of service should serve as an inspiration for all current and future law enforcement officers. We thank him for his selfless and unforgettable service. Rest in peace.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Chris was killed.

To the Cortijo family, fellow officers, and all who call Chris beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

Chris was my son's brother in blue as well as brother in green so I also thank him for his service to our country in the Corps and bid him semper fi.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Cortijo gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 9, 2014.

He went to work one morning and did not know
This shift he served would bring such sorrow
This call to duty would be his last
His time on earth is now his past
God set this day as his time to go
Rest in peace Officer Cortijo, now a hero
He gave the ultimate sacrifice
With integrity and pride he paid the price
His family, friends and colleagues will mourn
As an angel in heaven he is now reborn
His golden heart stopped beating
Hardworking hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the very best.

It seems that LAPD and the community has lost a great motorcylce police officer. I know that Officer Cortijo must have encountered a many near misses while working as a motor office. I always said that if I was ever hit it was because I didn't see it coming. I know that God in all his glory had Officer Cortijo covered when he was struck by the DIUD driver. Officer Cortijo you can now take off your helmet and take a rest, God will take of your family.

Rick & I both had the pleasure of having Chris as a friend and a co-worker. I worked with Chris at my mom’s restaurant, Tondo’s. One of my favorite memories is when his co-workers & I covered his VW Bug entirely in Oreo cookies as a joke. In retrospect this was not such a good idea, but Chris took it well and we all had a good laugh.

While working at the Restaurant he got accepted into the LAPD and then became my husband Rick’s go to guy at PM Entertainment on most of his film productions. He was usually the first person Rick would see when he drove up to the set. He was always smiling and in a good mood.

All I can say is Chris was a good man, and we will never forget him. God bless Chris and his family.

With Love
