Just the thought of him--my sister and I were lucky to work with him. His crankiness, his intelligence, his wide range of interests, his guarded kindness. The dichotomy of his character made me an admirer, and I hope, a friend--because I truly, and still, considered him one of my most valued. As much as my heart breaks from losing him, it also goes out even more to his wife and sons, who knew him better and held him closer, and whom I know he valued more than anything else. With his passing, we have lost a man who embodied integrity. I know that I, for one, am a better person for having known him.

He went to work that day and did not know
This shift he served would bring such sorrow
This call to duty would be his last
His time on earth is now his past
God set this day as his time to go
Rest in peace Officer Morrissy, now a hero
He gave the ultimate sacrifice
With integrity and pride he paid the price
His family, friends and colleagues will mourn
As an angel in heaven he is now reborn
His golden heart stopped beating
Hardworking hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the very best.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Jim was killed.

To the Morrissy family, fellow officers, and all who call Jim beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the many years od dedicated service Officer Morrissy gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 17, 2014.
