Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Jason Marc Crisp

It's been 10yrs, but it might as well have been yesterday. Your professionalism, honor, integrity, humility, and friendship is sorely missed. You will never be forgotten my friend.

This is my third attempt at writing this reflection today. Halfway through each of the previous two, I've stopped, studied them, then deleted them, because they somehow just didn't capture what I wanted to say on this March 12th. No matter what I wrote, each word became more inadequate than the one before it until the whole thing seemed to lose any significance, when trying to "reflect" upon this date. I'm feebly left with merely writing, "thanks". Thanks for your years of service and the fidelity to service you demonstrated ten years ago today. The example you set for the rest of us when you volunteered to help fellow officers and you willingly entered those woods set a pretty high bar for the rest of us. I hope our service since has honored that standard. And to your family, and particularly your wife and children, thanks for sharing Jason with the rest of us.

Jason, you, your family and Maros are still in my heart. I remember the long days working together in the aftermath of AP flood. You and Maros were awesome. One of my last memories of you was leaving the SC ALERT after a snow storm and you insisting Cindy and I check in constantly until we got home to AR. You're dedication and character is what we should all strive to be..RIP

Officer Crisp gave me tickets at Uwharrie National Forest and Wilson Creek, both in NC. One for not putting a fire out properly and the other for a firearm violation, which I deserved. He was very courteous both times and we knew each other on a last name basis from our several interactions in the wilderness. I'm saddened to hear of his death and wish his family the best.

I recently met Crisp’s mother in one of the campgrounds along our information trap line while on a fire assignment in Alaska. I was saddened but honored she chose to share Jason’s story with me. It’s a reminder to many of my fellow firefighters and LEOs to stay vigilant when dealing with bad people in the woods.

I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Over here in UK I remember you and Maros every day, when I put on my memorial bracelet. Like many others on SIGforum.com, I was touched beyond words to read about your story, and have to admit that finding out that the bracelet would also bear a paw just about broke me up. It's a thing to remember, that you don't have to be a 'front-line' cop in a high-risk 'burg like Chicago or Detroit to be asked to lay down your life in the line of duty.
