Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Eric Tyrone Smith, Sr.

For Detective Eric Smith:

As law-officers we encounter a mulitude of suspects in our career, and none of us really know what we can expect from any of them. Yet, while there are those who would be critical of our actions and point out an error we have made, or a rule we should have followed, the simple truth is that we all have not been continuously vigilant at least once. Any of us could have become a victim during the handling the of suspects albeit not for constant vigilance - and a little bit of luck.
We regret that Eric would be the next law-officer to forfeit his life in the process of protecting others.
We pray for Eric's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.
We are proud to render Detective Eric Smith, a soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.

Pennsylvania State Police

We the members of the Vicksburg Police Department wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy in the death of Investigator Eric Smith and our lost of a Law Enforcement brother. We all have slogans or mottos like “To protect and serve”; “We Serve and Protect”; “To Protect with Courage, To Serve with Compassion Honor”; “Integrity, Service, With Honor We Serve” and many others. These we often live by never knowing when we will have to pay the ultimate price that is required to live up to these mottos. This is done that there may be peace in the land in which we live; Matthew 5:9 says “Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God”.
To the family, nothing is truer that the words found in Psalm 30:4-5 “Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.5 For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.”
May the God of Peace give you Peace and Joy through His Holy Spirit.

Deputy Chief Mitchell L. Dent
Vicksburg Police Department
