I was Bitner's friend's girlfriend back in Vicenza when we were all still teenagers. He was a lovely soul. I'm very sorry to hear this news. I still remember that funny car trip when Jay sent you and Yonce to pick me up from the train station. You were so kind. It's no surprise you became a police officer. Phyllis

I'm sickened by the judge's decision to reduce the sentence of Jeremy's killer!

DENVER — An Arapahoe County judge reduced the sentence for Conner Donohue, a 22-year-old who was convicted of driving drunk, hitting and killing an Englewood police officer in 2012.

Donohue was sentenced to 10 years in prison in May 2013 for the crash that happened in 2012, when he was 20.

Friday Judge Marilyn Antrim reduced his sentence by six months and made Donohue eligible for a prison parole program.

District Attorney George Brauchler said the adjusted sentence really only allowed Donohue to be eligible for the parole program 2 to 3 months earlier than had no change been made.

He called the judge’s ruling a sign that the justice system is broke for defendants who kill while driving drunk.

Donohue drove away after hitting Officer Jeremy Bitner as Bitner was conducting a traffic stop near West Belleview Avenue and South Broadway on Memorial Day 2012.

He was pulled over several miles from the crash and arrested.

Donohue pleaded guilty to charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injuries and driving under the influence in February 2013. He could have been sentenced to a maximum of 34 years, but was given a 10-year prison sentence.

Bitner, 39, was a U.S. Army veteran and a seven-year veteran of the Englewood Police force. He was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the Englewood Police Department.

Hundreds of police officers from around the state attended his funeral in June.

Englewood Chief of Police John Collins said the sentence reduction was symbolic of a justice system that is, in his view, taking the defendant into account more than the victim and their family.

Bitner’s wife, Tina, was also in the courtroom Friday for the hearing. She called the ruling unfair saying she was sad to be reliving the case only seven months after Donohue was sentenced.
