Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Barbara Ann Pill

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face.
"In the line of duty," I hear them say;
My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.

My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.
I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past;
Dear God, let my name be the last.

My grandfather and Baltimore Police Officer, John P. Burns, was killed after responding to a domestic dispute in the early 1930's. My mother was 6 years old and an only child. My grandmother never fully recovered from the pain, but time does help. Focus on the wonderful memories. I'm sure she would want you to be strong.

The thoughts and prayers of my family are with your family.

I heard on the news about a deputy being killed in the line of duty. Then last night, the night of your funeral, I saw your face and realized we had a connection. I taught your son, Jeremy. I saw his face when I saw yours.

I am so sorry for the loss your family has suffered. The whole community is thankful for the service and sacrifice you have made.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

RIP Deputy Barbara Pill ID#644 EOW 3/6/2012

Yesterday we laid to rest and said goodbye to a true hero, wife, mother, grandmother, mentor and partner. Barb, you will be missed, but your memory and legacy will live on forever. It will take all of us a while to get back to normal, and we will never fully recover from you being taken from us so tragically. We push on and persevere and keep your memory alive. One thing we are not meant to understand is God's plan for all of us, and at times like these it is extremely difficult, but it is part of the ways in which the Lord tests us on a daily basis. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, co-workers and law enforcement as a whole community. It was an honor to have served with and known you Barb. The feeling I got while driving in the procession yesterday and seeing a community take time out of their day to stand on the roadside, praying and waving flags was extremely moving and brought tears to my eyes. I'm glad we still live in a place that has not become numb to such horrific events and that still cares for fellow man. It is just sad that it took something like this to happen for the community support to be seen at such a level. Rest at ease Barb, we'll take it from here.

The people of the Melbourne area will feel Officer Pill's loss greatly and she will be sorely missed. She was one of those unique officers who really cared and committed herself to making her community a better place. She looked out for our youth in a way more encouraging than dehumanizing; she was the embodiment of what a cop is supposed to be. I don't even live there, but know of one young lady to whom she has been an understanding and fair, compassionate friend. That's what a cop is in the end, someone looking out for us, even if it means protecting ourselves from ourselves sometimes. Rest in Peace, Officer Pill. You've been the best of the best of cops. Love and prayers to her family and "friends." <3
