Reflections for Sergeant David Ernest Enzbrenner

"IT’S HARD TO BE in a place of sadness during Advent and Christmas. The culture proclaims cheerfulness and happiness. Others expect us to participate in the joy of the season and feel uncomfortable with brokenheartedness and grieving.

But our sadness and mourning, especially in the midst of Advent and Christmas, positions us right where we are supposed to be — in the present moment, feeling whatever feelings reside in us right now. Even in the instance of long-ago loss, we naturally bring to mind the sadness of remembering, the mourning of lost loved ones, lost hopes or dreams at this time of year.

There is room for all at the manger. The good news of Christ’s birth comes to the oppressed, bent over by grief; the brokenhearted, full of tears; those imprisoned by depression and despair. Christ comes to comfort all who mourn, trusting that in God’s time joy will replace sadness.

God of the brokenhearted, it is hard to be in mourning during this joyous time of year. But I know that you come to all of us, especially those filled with tears as captives to grief. Wrap them in your comforting spirit. Amen.

Carry these words in your heart today:
God comforts all who mourn.

I cannot find the words to express my sincere sorrow for the loss of Sergeant Enzbrenner to his wife, friends and family members for this senseless act. As an unarmed Community Service Officer that depends on the security of an armed uniformed officer when serving papers to individuals, I know first hand that he gave his life to save one of ours. There is no greater sacrifice and my heart goes out to David for his unselfish act to protect us. For David may you rest in peace as now you are home with God!

David, "it is a beautiful day. And I am not yelling at you. But, Sir, this is not a lot of fun." You were a wonderful husband and father and support for your family. You were a good citizen in your community. You were a good officer to those who served with you, including me. I will help Kerri and the girls in any way I can. You were my friend. I love you. The APD has a very close family of officers and I consider many of them my greatest friends. David being one of the best of friends I have ever had. I worked on David's shift for over 5 years at the PD. David was a great Sergeant, a great leader, a mentor, a very great friend, and a superb family man. He loved his wife and kids more than anything in the world and will be with them every day.

Take care my friend you will always be loved and never forgotten. "ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!"

Sir:

It was an honor and a privilege to have worked with you and for you. Thank you for your instruction and leadership during that time. The things I learned from you have served me well throughout my career and have made me a better officer. There are some big shoes to fill in Atchison, but Heaven is a safer place.

Thank you again.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14: But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

We will see you again Hero. Walk your beat in Heaven until we arrive. Thank you for what you have given to your community.

I didn't know David personally, but had the opportunity to work around him several times this summer. Atchison, KS is a special community that had a particularly tough year in 2011 with the Missouri River flooding, a grain elevator explosion and now the passing of this hero. Our hearts go out to David's family and friends, his co-workers, and the rest of the community that he protected for so many years. David, you have done your duty and the torch is passed. May God bless you and your family now and forever more. Rest in peace SGT Enzbrenner.
