I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiance Dennis. Every time I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the officer they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Deputy VanMeter. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. (The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. I can also be found on Face Book.) You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Charles, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Charles' life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Charles' life was about so much more than the way he died. Charles will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Deputy VanMeter, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been eight & a half years and he's still very much missed and forever loved.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

Charles,
You will be missed. The memories of high school and working together at the pool that summer will always be held dear. You were a great man: honest, hardworking, and eager to befriend others.
Thank you for the time I got to know you.

I attended Deputy VanMeters funeral with many of his Family, Friends, and Co-workers. I did not know him in life but from all the stories I have read here and that were shared with me that day I believe he was an amazing person. It always pains me to see the best of us taken away much too early.

Vanmeter,
You are a great deputy and I choose to believe that is why God called you to patrol for him.
I can not remember a time that I saw you that you did not have a smile on your face.
It was an honor to work with you.
I will keep your family in my prayers.

Van Meter, I will miss you more than you know. I remember the first time we met at Bucees ( 4 years ago), we instantly became friends. Everytime I saw you, there was a smile on your face which led to something funny you had to tell me. And when I didn't see you, I would ask where you were. I will cherish our last two hour conversation sitting on Business Center and F.M. 518 three weeks ago. I thank GOD for allowing us to meet and making some of my tough times easy with your many, hilarious stories.( I will never forget the chase on 288 and your joke ;). REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER IN BLUE...

I hadn't personally known you but for a few weeks, we met at a training event put on by the Sheriff's Office, where we joked about you driving your Lincoln Navigator through the corn fields. Me and my family would like to express our condolences to your family and the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. Rest in Peace Brother......we've got it from here.
