Reflections for Sergeant Thomas John Baitinger

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.... See More
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Tom, you were like the big brother I never had. You always supported me when I was down and always had a joke or story to make me laugh. Paige is your soulmate and we will take care of her, as you watch down on us from heaven. I will miss our s'mores around the fire pit and the way you always made time for the boys, especially during Michael's deployment last year. "Uncle Tom" - life will not be the same without your hearty laugh and beautiful smile. We were blessed to have you in our lives.

For Sergeant Tom Baitinger:
and
Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz:

Our duty as law officers is fraught with risk and danger. No incident more than the one occurring this day illustrates the twists and the turns of fate more for all who enforce the law. To seek a felon carries with it every imaginable scenario ever practiced in training. None-the-less, each encounter with those who will kill is unique. Our brothers Tom and Jeff, along with others, faced the worst. And the worst occurred. Two officers lost their life, and another was wounded, for the sake of law and order. We regret that this day would have to be - for all of them. The entire national law-enforcement community is stricken numb, but we remain true to our pledge. Both now and forever.

We pray for Tom's and Jeff's family, friends, co-workers, and all who care about them. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

As a retired state trooper and a Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff, I am proud to render them a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennsylvania State Police

God be with your family, and loved ones I pray. Rest easy my Brother in Law, your watch on earth is now over.......
