In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I WANT TO SAY THAT KEVIN CUSACK IS A PERSON THAT I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE KNOWN. HE WAS SOMEONE THAT I LOOKED UP TO. HIS HUMOR WOULD BRIGHTEN ANYONE'S MOOD. HE WAS A SUPERVISOR TO ME FOR AWHILE AND I MUST SAY I LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH HIS STORIES, JOKES, AND ADVISE. I THINK BACK TO THE LAST TIME WE SPOKE AND REMEMBER HIM JOKING. I WAS OUT OF TOWN WHEN I RECEIVED THE CALL AND I FELT HELPLESS, BUT I FIND COMFORT THAT YOU ARE NOW IN A BETTER PLACE WITH THE LORD. I WILL ALWAYS FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE KNOWN KEVIN AND I HOPE HIS FAMILY WILL FIND PEACE DURING THIS TOUGH TIME. REST IN PEACE KEVIN AND I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU.

THIS IS MY HIGHWAY....

This is my highway, the safety I own,
A trooper at work, my battles unknown.
This badge leads the way; it takes me that far,
Along with the color of silver and blue stripe on my car.
Today I leave my family for a road tuff and mean,
No matter what lies ahead, I must arrive on scene.
I will concur my duty, then head to another,
Do all that's required of a trooper, and still watch for my brother.
A brother is a trooper; he always has my back,
His eyelids may grow heavy; his loyalty will not lack.
We can grow weak, have no time to rest,
I will complete my assignment that's why I am the best.
I walk tall and proud, that description won't fade,
My shoes a mirror finish and grays sharp as a blade.
No matter the conditions, I sacrifice no end,
I stay loyal and true, my standards won't bend.
A trooper travels a short distance, will go a long haul,
Courtesy, efficiency, on every call.
I will miss a birthday, a holiday, a job with its own greed,
That's why the best are troopers, they won't follow they lead.
From collisions to enforcement, DUI they say we lead,
I am a trooper I am a brother, that is my creed.
I have completed my assignment, stayed loyal and true,
Tomorrow I say the same prayer, till I am 10-42.

Rest in peace Kevin, I will miss working with you. You will never be forgotten. Heroes live forever.
