Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Walter Kent Mundell, Jr.

Deputy Mundell,

It was shortly after the 911 tapes of your incident were released when my partner and myself had picked up a subject to return him to our ship. We entered the subjects house and although we were shaken from listening to the 911 recordings, we were on our toes more than ever. I am sorry that you paid the ultimate sacrifice, but losing you has made others more aware. I applaud your service and I know you are missed by your friends, family, and co-workers. Rest Peacefully Sir.

How tragic! An Officer, husband and father stolen from those who loved him. Nothing I can say can eliminate the pain you must feel. Just know that today, in Indiana, someone thought of him and said a prayer.

Was it really two years ago today that Mike Blair keyed up from Harborview and spoke words that will stick with me forever?

"Seventy-two, Pierce County."

I knew in that moment that what I was about to hear would echo in ny mind forever.

I answered him, "Seventy-two...."

"Four-two-three is out of service."

I followed his brief message with every alert tone we had and repeated it for everyone to hear. Moments before he called on the radio, you had passed. You had made it through Christmas and even though our prayers never stopped, you went home to be with our Lord.

I think of you, Mark, Tina, Greg and Ronnie every day and miss you all so very much. I pray often for all of your families, your immediate families and your families in law enforcement and wish those days had never happened.

Keep watching over all of us buddy, you are dearly missed.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the second anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Two years ago today, Kent. Two years ago, and it still hurts like it was yesterday. I can still hear your voice and remember the last time we talked, and I'm grateful for those moments like you wouldn't believe. I ran into Kirsten at Fred Meyer two weeks ago and you'd be proud of her. She harassed me and she's quick witted, just like you. Your memory lives on and we still talk about you at work. Inevitably, it ends in laughter and I know that's the way you'd want it. Keep watch over everyone, and know that we will not forget you. We remember you, Kent. Today, and all the days past as well as ahead. Rest well, brother.

Kent,
I was flattened by the murder of my four friends on 12-29-09. You lived by me in the same neighborhood and I will never forget you coming over to tell me that if there is anything you can do, to please call. That meant a lot to me. Shortly after the memorial, I left for CO to take some time away. While I was there, I saw the news that you had been shot along with Nick and I don't have any words for how I felt that night. You were a brave man, a warrior at work, and a great father. I will miss you.

Kent, I can't believe its coming up on 2 years. I sure do miss you guys (John Bananola 271). The Christmas holidays will never quite be the same. The first year after you and the Lakewood guys were murdered, was the worst year of my of my life. We were all in such a haze of disbelief/shock and sorrow. It was almost too much to bear. It has eased up some, but it will never be the same. I love you man. I'll see you soon.

Well Kent.....it was a year earlier this week. Several of us made the trek up to Ashford where a trail and brook were named in your honor. Your mom spoke highly of you yet again. I finally got to meet Lisa...and I turned into a blithering idiot. I did not want to upset her and hope I didn't. At the end of the speakers, your mom let a dove go and then several more were set free....it was pretty awesome, but I know you were watching. Woo hoo to you...

One year ago today you were trying cut a guy a Christmas break and get his uninvited, intoxicated self out of the house. You paid for your kindness with your life, but you now have life eternal in Heaven.

You are not forgotten; God bless you, Deputy Sheriff Mundell.

Dear Kent - although we never met, your bravery and valor has impacted my family enormously. Your sergeant is married to my niece. Because of your sacrifice, you saved not only his life, but the lives of the others in the house. You were not only a co-worker, but a friend, and they miss you so much. While they honored you in public in Piece County and in DC this week, they also honor you in private. I know that God welcomed you with open arms because there is no greater love than to lay down your life for others.

Hey Kent,

I'm on dayshift now if you can believe it!! I know, I know - you and I on dayshift was just not something we ever though we belonged on, but nonetheless I'm here and I miss you like crazy.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you, and we miss you very, very much. Nothing like a "Woooo hoooo!" to get our day going.

You take care and watch over everyone. It's just not the same without you, brother. It's just not.
